Rudder Post Leakage was created by bakhita
I found something yesterday and wanted to know the best way forward. The rudder post on my IP440 has a slow leak, as you can see in the attached photos.
I would assume this is not an optimal situation, but am not sure how serious.
1. Do I need to immediately address the slow leak, or is this just a small inconvenience that can be taken care of at a later date?
2. The manual calls for 3/8" square packing material. Can someone share more insight on the specifics of this material, i.e. name, type, and where and how much I might need?
3. Where can I find instruction on how to tighten and/or replace the packing material?
4. Can this adjustment/replacement be done in the water?

Thanks,
-Paul

First off, spray that all with WD40 and use a wire brush to clean up all that rust. Try to get that back to clean and shiny. Then you might be able to have a mechanic simply tighten the packing nut. The small nut on the bottom needs loosen then the large cap nut, the packing nut, could be tightened down mayb 1/8 to 1/4 turn and that may stop the leak.

If not, then, this all unthreads and that large packing nut slides up the rudder post. The packing material many of us use is GFO Gortex packing. You would use dental picks and remove the old packing and install 2 or 3 new rings of new packing.

With all that said, in 20 years, I have never had to repack our rudder post.

I would
#1. Clean it
#2. Tighten it.

This is the GFO Gortex packing

Hayden,

I did tighten the packing nut, this reduced the leakage drastically, but there still seems to be some very slow leakage. I will watch this for a couple of weeks and decide what to do.
Thanks for the WD40 tip, will do. I did hit it with a wire brush, it will take much elbow grease, hopefully the WD40 will help!
Also, thanks for the reply!

Glad to hear. If you do end up repacking, the best packing is this newer style packing called GFO that I linked you to above. The old school packing of flax or grease or anything else is old school and not the case anymore.

Let us know how it all goes. Clean it up, WD40 soak it and wire brush it all.
It will look new soon.
