Hello:
I am in the process of upgrading my anchor, rode, and windlass on our new-to-us IP38.
After studying all the data for hours it has become apparent that 3/8 HT chain is called for in our application (the boat currently has 5/16th HT). However, I am concerned about whether the increase of weight in the bow of the IP38 will be too much.
So, I am looking for reports from any owners with IP38s that have gone with 3/8 HT chain rode. If so, what length did you go with, and were there any adverse effects to the balance and performance of the boat?
I could always stay with new 5/16 HT and that would be fine in relatively settled conditions, but it would be outside the Safe Working Load Limit for any serious storms (and where I go in the North, serious winds are not uncommon). Storm force winds would result in a load of about 48 - 55% of the Breaking Limit of the chain. It sounds as if that would be fine, but I really don't know much about the science of chain construction, so going with 3/8 HT would definitely cover all the bases according to the books.
Of note: Whatever I go with, I will have to have a minumum of 300ft of chain.
Any thoughts or insights into what you have experienced would be most helpful.
Thanks so much, Philip
