Hayden, This question is mainly for you, but may help someone else in the future. Considering switching to a traditional pedestal and sourcing parts. Not at the boat this weekend, so a couple of questions. The rudder shaft is 2", correct? How long is the drag link on your setup?

Here are the dimension on the IP 35 to replace the help with a new modern CD-i Edson Pedistal

Rudder Post is 2"
8" arm added to rudder post
Edson CD-i Helm bolts directly into the same holes as the existing compass pedestal
www.edsonmarine.com/support/PDFs/installation/EB417CDi.pdf
CD-i Helm comes with the arm below the deck
Connecting rod center line to center line is 27.5", This is called Helm Distance.

Here are some photos since I had to take apart the cover to get these measurements.

Here are the photos from 2002 when I installed this Edson CD-i helm. This documents the steps of removing the old style helm and working out the install of this new helm. Edson was very helpful, plus this was the first time the helm had been installed into an old IP. They wanted to know how it all would work out. Now with 25,000 miles at sea with this helm, I can say it works great. It might be one of the first things I would do to an older IP.

Here is the link to my install

Thanks for taking the time to do that, we really do appreciate you. Is there a reason to go with the Edson over the Lewmar Cobra Enguard, which is essentially the same as the original on the 35?

On Ebay, there are complete pedestals that are new and overstock from FINNGULF Sailboats. $1300 total with shipping to the US. They come complete with pedestal, drag link, Tiller Lever, guard rails, etc. It seems everything is in spec on the size end of things and the helm is essentially the same helm IP installed sans the wheel and mechanics. With the only thing missing to bore the tiller arm after getting an exact micrometer reading of the rudder post.

Ebay Link

What am I missing as this seems too good to be true to switch out to a standard helm, keep the original look, and best of all for ~$1500 total?

That is not an Edson CDI helm. It's made by Lewmar, England.. You need to see if the bolt pattern is the same to bolt to the cockpit sole. An Edson will bolt right in.
Otherwise it looks good. I would want to find the company pdf specs first.

We did purchase the helm and the specifications all look good for a fit. One question I have. Did you cut a key-way in the rudder post and if you did, how did you do it in the boat?

We did not cut a keyway into the rudder post. We drilled a hole as the Edson arm included a treaded bolt with a point to go into the rudder post.

The machine shop who is boring the tiller arm thinks a bolt is a bad idea as too much torque on it and suggests cutting a keyway in the arm and shaft. Don't really want to drop the rudder, so he also suggested having the key tig welded on the shaft. Obviously Edson felt the bolt was fine for our boat since they will build them either way. Think we may just go that way as I am not crazy about dropping the rudder or welding in the boat.

In picture 5 above, you can see the Edson arm clamped onto the rudder post and the bolt on the arm. We drilled into the rudder post and this bolt presses into that hole.

The arm is very tight due to the clamping of the arm around the rudder post.

This has 20,000+ nm on it.

We did not drop the rudder.
