I plan to purchase a 1988 IP 38. I have it under contract, but have not surveyed it yet. The chainplates on this boat are original. I want to replace all four chainplates before I take it offshore. After doing some research on this issue, I have learned that the chainplates are fiberglassed into the hull and difficult to replace. I have also learned that the IP factory will sell replacement chainplates and perform the work for about $10K. This boat is currently near St Augustine, FL. I would prefer to have the work done somewhere on the East coast of Florida (or further North) rather than take the boat all the way around to the IP factory on the West coast of Florida.

Does anyone know of a yard/contractor on the East coast of Florida (or further North) who has experience with this particular repair? I would really like to find somebody who knows what they're doing to perform this important task.
Thanks

Tim:
Since the boat is in Florida, I would look into a direct bid from the factory for this job. Trucking the boat into the factory is not that expensive. You can ask for a quote for trucking from the company that moves all new Island Packets: www.jouleyacht.com/

Replacing chainplates is something most owners will not take on themselves. You will be replacing all eight. Three on each side and two backstays.

There is another company in Texas that has replaced more than anyone else. They are called Cosmetic BOat Repair located at...
www.cosmeticboatrepair.com/chainplate_repair.html
These guys will drive in with a van and two people. In 4 days they have the job finished! This is another way to go.

I do not know of any other yards doing this work, but I guess any fiberglass yard can do it.

I would get quotes from..
1. The Factory (use the contact link in here)
2. Trucking fees
3. Bid from Cosmetic.

I I have an 1990 IP 32-2. I had mine done at Embree Marine in St. Petersburg Fl. 3 years ago. They are very familiar with the IP chain plate issues, having done many. This is not an easy job, all furniture has to come out to gain access, the old ones have to be ground out, new ones fabricated by Garhour in Ca. and glassed back in. Then the furniture all goes back in. It took them a month and I visited every week. When mine was done, I could not tell anyone had been there. Embree did an excellent job for about 6K.

One more option. The Island Packet Yachts Factory will send a team out to your boat to do this job in the water at your site. You will need to pay travel costs, so it is best to get your boat near the IPY factory in the Tampa Bay Area. Snead Island Boat Works in Palmetto, FL is 34 miles from the factory. You also could get to St. Pete for even a closer location to the factory. This would place your boat about 12 miles from the IPY factory.

It seems Embree Marine charged a good price for it. Would you recommend them over going to the IP Factory?

Marko

The Island Packet Yachts factory is no longer doing refits. The factory/company was sold.

For refit jobs I would go to Snead Island Boat works in Palmetto FL for west coat FL jobs. Also Emvree Marine in St. Pete.
Or
Go to Mack Sails in Stuart Fl for east coast refit jobs.these are tge best places.
