Sorry don't know exactly where Deale is but I just used a surveyor in Rock Hall Maryland by the name of Jim Reihl. I think he is one of the most professional and thorough that I have ever used. He is fully qualified and knows IP yachts inside out. His e-mail address is as follows:

I just bought a 485 so I hope so. I have done lots of homework, if you are looking for a solid, well built cruising boat then yes. If you are looking for something to race around the bouys then no! This will be boat No. 9 for me and hopefully my last. They are well built, well engineered and very comfortable under sail. The full keel makes them a little difficult in tight quarters, hopefully it has a bow thruster!

What we are looking for is something that is safe, easy to live aboard, well built and can be enjoyed for some years. We don't have much money but the boat is is going for 85,000 for an IP 38 which is a steal, I think. I hate Canadian winters and want to winter in the Caribbean and maybe if I get good enough go across the pond for a trip.

I have looked at an IP 28 and was impressed with the quality of workmanship.

But alack and alas no bow thruster on an older (1989) IP.

Mark:
The deal you have found sounds like a fantastic deal to me for an IP38. Sure this is an older model of the IP40, but still, it is an IP and we know the quality that comes with that name. We have owned Ip27-058 from 19991-2001, and now IP35-165 from 2001-present and I have no complaints. For living aboard, your IP38 is a great set up with the 2 cabin 2 heads. The one aspect to inspect, that many older IPs have to deal with, is the holding tanks failing and needing to be replaced. Most last about 10 yrs. I replaced both our IP27 and IP35 tanks. Lucky for me, these were easy to get to. I am not sure how the tanks are on the IP38, but chances are, you will need a new holding tank. Other than that, check the engine compression, if she fires up after a few turns, like 1 or 2, then chances are she is good. If she cranks for several and then slowly starts up, chances are these is in need of a rebuild.

Let us know how it progresses....and congrats on finding this good deal. It is a buyers, market!

In the past to check on the engine it was common to take and engine oil analysis and it would tell you a lot about the condition of the equipment. You are looking for chrome, nickel or any indication of metal wear as well as sediment etc. The problem was you would have to wait, now you can get instant tests with paper strips like litmus paper that give you a good indication. Good luck on the purchase
