Must have: FLY SWATTERS NJ Coast was created by hayden
OMG, the flies off the NJ coast have been a killer this year. We have experienced this before, but this year, they are really bad. Even in 20 knots of beam winds, they killed us! I IS A MUST HAVE, THAT EVERY CREW MEMBER HAVE A FLY SWATTER. Do not get caught out here with only one. Radeen and I have two, and they are just about worn out and broken. We hope they hold up until we are far enough offshore to lose these pests.

We even use our screens and companionway screen to cut down on them below so you can get rest when off watch. I do not know how the NJ residents live with these flies. They bit and will draw blood. We often have joked about how we "crashed the boat" while both swatting the flies.

So, make sure you have good fly swatters if you plan on doing the New Jersey Coast or anchorages. WE DO and THEY HELP...

Just a few we swatted withing 10 min below!

Here's a tip from a Jersey sailor. When sailing in our area keep a spray bottle of Avon Skin-so-soft and use it like suntan lotion. The biting, green head flies hate it and stay away.
Another, not so favorite remedy, is a fiberglass cast on your wife's leg. A few years ago my wife broke her leg and was in a hip to ankle fiberglass cast. No green heads for our entire boating season. We can't understand why she wont break her leg each year so we can have comfortable sailing. (LOL).
