This weekend I began the re-finishing of the cabin sole using the product UltimateSole from ultimatesole.com/
I have been wanting to do this job for years and I actually bought the product several years ago, but never got to it. So this year was it. I sanded the sole with 120 grit to remove the old varnish which was very thin. This took about 1.5 hrs. The dust was very bad, and maybe I should have used a liquid stripper, but did not. After sanding, I sanded with 220, then cleaned up with a vacuum. In prep for the sanding sealer, I cleaned the surface with their cleaner, and then applied the sanding sealer. This product was so easy to use and with a foam brush, you simply brush it on and it will level out. The brushing took about 20 minutes per coat on the IP35 for the V, Saloon and qtr. berth. What an easy job and a simple product to use. After allowing the first coat of sealer to dry overnight, I applied a second coat of sealer the next day. It looks fantastic already and I am only 1/2 finished. Here is a photo of the sole with just the sanding sealer, look how great it looks….Has anyone else re-finished their cabin sole? If so, with what and how?

Hayden,

This looks really nice! Are you still pleased after 7 months?

We're looking to refinish the sole on our boat and I was hoping to get your opinion. It appears that the previous owners used area rugs and now the sole has obvious dark and light areas. The overall finish is pretty dull and we're working up the nerve to tackle this project. Did your sole have fairly even coloring before you refinished it? I'm wondering if I go to the trouble of sanding it down do you think the color would even up? I know the vaneer is pretty thin and I won't have much to work with. I guess the alternative to refinishing is putting down area rugs over the dark spots:>)

It has held up really well, and I like it. The sad news is that the product is not sold anymore from what I can tell. Their web site store is not showing any products. www.ultimatesole.com

So maybe you can find it in stock at a few places.

As for sanding. I would never sand off the old finish again! It made a total mess in the boat, and it took a long time to sand off the finish. As for sanding the wood veneer, that is easy once the finish is off. Sure, it is thin, and you can easily sand through the veneer, so you just have to be careful. Others have talked about using liquid strippers to remove the old finish and also to even the color. This sounds good to me, now after I sanded.

Bottom line, it looks great, it was easier than expected, and once sanded, applying the finish was easy and fast.

Hi Hayden,

Ultimate Sole looks great. However, don't you find you're skate around on ice if it gets wet?

Not at all. This finish is made to actually provide friction in stocking feet or bare feet or shoes. It was used on all Moorings yachts and other until it closed up shop and is no longer made. Great product, it is a shame it is no longer made.

Nice job, but when sanding check out a Festool sander and and vacuum. Next to no dust. Remember the dust is toxic.

That looks great. Hope to refinish all the inside woodwork on ours next year. It needs a serious freshening up.

On Windswept Dreams I sanded and recoated using Bona's product. I applied three coats and am very happy with the ease of application, finish appearance, durability and traction.

While sanding I used a small vaccuum duct-taped to a sanded, that worked well but of course there was still dust but not too bad. Between coats I lightly sanded and recleaned. The Bona product is non-toxic, water based and easily applied. It goes on as a milky liquid that you spread over the surface. It dries in a few hours to a clear shiny appearance.

Because it is so easily applied and non-toxic I can envision applying again without dread although after one-season in the Bahamas I have no reason to contemplate doing so.
