Krylon Fusion for Boot Stripe

Krylon Fusion for Boot Stripe was created by hayden
Another IP owner, Ed L. IP37 suggested that we use Krylon Fusion spray paint to paint our plastic sump fittings for the shower and the bilge on the stern. We did, and that worked out really well. It worked so well, we decided to also try his other suggestion for our boot stripe! WHAT? That's right, we re-painted our entire boot stripe with a $5.00 can of Krylon Spray paint from the local Ace hardware store. The bid to re-paint the stripe by the boat yard was $1,000 so we said no thanks. Now after nearly 4 months of hard use, and cruising from Maryland to Maine, I can report that this stuff really holds up. It has not flaked off or faded. All I was planning on doing was just to touch up the scratches. Once I started, it looked so good, we painted the entire IP35 boot stripe with 2-3 coats with one can. We did tape off the stripe, and the spray was very easy to control. UNREAL how fast and easy this was.

So, if your boot stripe is looking bad, then give this a try.

we just painted our boot stripe on our ip 35 . we aksed the boatyard and the Krylon folks about using it for painting the bootstrip. krylon would not advocate it's use, probably due to legal reasons and our yard would not say pro or con about it. so we went and put on two coats of interlux "prefection". it took my wife and i two hours on two days to apply . it looks great. i will be interested in your comments of the durability of the krylon product next season after being on the hull and salt water for one year. Hope to see you at the Rock Hall rdvu in sept

So far this seems to be working just fine. Here is a photo of the boat in Acadia Maine after the trip from Rock Hall, MD to Maine. No flaking off, no chips, looks great. I will try to get some photos of a close up as well.

Yes, we will be at the Rock Hall RDV, see you there...

Hayden,

After a full year with your travels to Maine etc., what's your feelings about Krylon, we're cruising in Florida (presently in Vero) and we'll be putting 'Gratitude' on the hard in April for some work among which is the boot stripe.

Thanks for any insights.

This has worked very well, it still looks jst like the day I sprayed it on. I would do this again in a second. This job was a quick repair, and I did not even prep this with any sanding. Next time I would, but this has held up so well, why? I simply taped off the boat, and sprayed the boot about 3 times with one can. I will take photos of this again this year when I launch, but this job was well worth the few dollars spent on it. I give the credit to Ed L.. IP37 owner who told me to first try this, Thank yo ED!

OK, it has now been a few years and this $4.00 spray can of paint is still holding up well. Here is a photo of the boot stripe in Newport News, VA after a year run from Maryland to Key West to Abacos to Maryland. It still looks great. If I were to do this again....I would do exactly the same thing knowing what I know now.

Bottom line....BOOT STRIPE PAINT with a $4.00 spray can of Krylon works just fine!

Here is the photo...

We have been hauled out now, first time since June 2011. We waxed, painted the bottom and decided to re-spray the boot stripe because it is TOOOOOO easy. We sanded the boot with 320 grit, wiped it with mineral spirits, taped it off and sprayed it twice with once $5.99 can of KRYLON FUSION NAVY paint. It looked good and it covered the scratches. Here is a photo of the completed job....

Hayden, I am impressed. I also read what I want, and even though it said "boot", I was looking at the gold. Ours is in need of some new paint/tape, might give the Krylon a try. thanks, george

If you want to redo the gold tape its easy. Heat gun and putty knife, wipe it off and tape on new. I think tape is way easier than painting.

See this photo essay on redoing the gold tape.

I was so glad to read this post as I just got a quote for 12 hours at $70/hour for re-doing my boot stripe. Can't wait to do it myself for less than $20!.
Thanks Hayden.

George:

We are going to try this year, in Puerto Rico, to use Rustoleum, why not. It can not hurt. We cant get Krylon there.
Our boot still looks good, we just have a serious scratch from this past year of doing the Thorny Path FL to the Caribbean Sea.
So, spray paint it is takes about 30 minutes. So easy!
