Jib was created by goburgie
This is my first post, after owning for almost four years now. We bought our IP35 12/07 in Charleston and cruised the Bahamas for 5 months in early 2008, then listed for sale. Did not sell for 2 years, so we moved it up to the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior, and I am lovin' it. Great sailing spot, but only for the few months of summer.

My deal is that I could never get our genoa to come through the gap unless there was the perfect amount of wind. Tried backing it, resorted to jibing and letting it out on the way around...total pain in the ass. So, I just disconnected the roller furling from the deck, and have it swung out and lashed to the port side stay. THe sail is off. Now I can tack without having to go up on deck to pull the darn sail around.

We never used the jib anyway. I know it sounds lame to not be able to get the genoa around, but I was really fed up with it. I always found that it got it the way. Now the forward deck is wide open (after I took off the club foot and stored below).

My question is whether disconnecting that does anything significant to the stability of the mast. We are day sailers now, never going out into any weather of significance. I could run the jib halyard to the deck mount if there were some sort of bigger blow, etc. Anyone really worried for me and the boat?

The staysail halyard is not structual to the mast as it has no opposing check stays to couter it. So removing it would not worry me. We too have trouble tacking but one trick is to use the staysail, unful it and cleat it tight. Then when tacking the jib it will be stopped by the staysail preventing it from wrapping the staysail rig. This works for us if we have a lot of tacking to do like on the chesapeake bay.

I too removed our staysail boom and tossed it overboard! It is not needed.

I know...it was here....I had to restore our entire site from a back up server that was 6 hours old. So your reply was lost during the revert back six hours.

I am sorry for the issue. If you would like to recap the post again, I would appreciate that.

I was thanking you for your post about the Krylon for the boot stripe and your winterizing tips, Heyden. I had some questions about how/where to disconnect the water heater, and how to make sure the water that circulates through the engine(to heat up the hot water without turning the electrical heating element on) is cleared out.

Then said how bummed I am that I was not making use of this site for the last couple years! Would love to chat with you live on the phone sometime. My cell is 651-470-3277
Thanks,
Burgie

Heyden, thanks for the tips....they all worked. I got the hot water heater bypassed and ready to winterize the water system, unblocked the water intake for the head...it was the ball at the intake that was stuck in place, probably from the RV antifreeze? Working well again.

Had two great sails this weekend. One with steady 20kt guts to 30 with a double reef and full genoa....nearly buried the rail a couple times, much to the horror of my wife. Remember I took down the jib....would have been a good size sail for that day. Next day a nice lazy 10kt wonder....great temps. Took video on my phone to remember during our long winter.

Hope you are well, and thanks again.
