Need help with IP 31 or IP 32 was created by knotrob
Dear IP owners, me and my wife we are very close to purchase 1988 IP 31 , very clean , well maintained , fresh water boat ready to sail. . Actually we are to sign sale agreement(good deal). But I came across 1990 IP 32 (required some cosmetic attention). And now I'm a little confused. Could you tell me please a real differences between these two models? I couldn't find any reviews and feedbacks on the IP 32 ( only IP 320- sailing magazine -1998) ) . Please share your insights and experiences , Is it worth it to change our interest fro IP 32 to 32?
I'll appreciate any input and opinions? Who better knows his boats than owners?
Thank you.
Fair winds. Robert

Robert:
Start off with the two specs IP31 vs IP32:

Island Packet 31

Island Packet 32 Specs

These two yachts are very different. Look at the displacemnt and look at the ballast. Look at the LWL this will give you hull speed. Hull speed is defined and calulated as such:
  • Hull speed is expressed as 1.34 X the square root of LWL, or length of waterline. If a cruising sailboat has a waterline length of 36 feet, she should be able to sail 1.34 x 6, or approximately eight knots.

I would expect the IP 32 to be a better sailor than the IP 31.

I also look at these two yachts as various design evolutions by IP. The 26, 27, 31 I would call version 1 of the hull design. This version has a wide stern and a very full bow entry.

Then the 29, 32, 35, 37 I would call as version 2 of the evolving IP hull shape. These have a lifted stern, trimmed in and a finer bow entry. Version 2 should sail better than the version 1 hulls.

Then the three-digit yachts came after that. The 380, 370, 420, etc and these added the sugar scoop i.e. swim platform/diving platform which lifted the stern up even higher and trimmed it in allowing for a much better trailing stern wave. The version 3 sail even better.

So, for me, I would look closely at the IP 32 vs the IP 31 and decide what you really want. Decide on budget and features. Then make your decision and buy your IP. No matter what, you will love the boat due to the wonderful quality build. These older IPs are great. You can refit them and they will last a lifetime.

We sailed the IP 27 from 1991-2001 then we sold her and bought the IP 35 and have sailed her from 2001 to present (2018 now) and we are still sailing her. Great yachts.

I look forward to other replies and what IP 31 and IP 32 owners can add.

Hayden

Late to the discussion, but I would echo Hayden’s comments – the IP 31 and IP 32 are very different boats. My wife and I just went through the same experience as you. Coming from catboat sailing we were drawn to the shallow draft of the IP31, especially the centerboard model (only 3 feet). We looked at a number of them but for whatever reason didn’t feel ready to make an offer. Then we saw a posting for an IP32 nearby and were sold. A few additional thoughts:

Significantly, the boat was bigger in every way, feeling more like the IP35 (which we also looked at) than the IP31. If you’ve been aboard both you undoubtedly noticed that below decks the forward cabin and V-berth are much roomier, the quarter berth bigger, and more stowage overall, in part because the hull form (I assume) allows the settee lockers to have more volume and both the water and fuel tanks to be located under the cabin sole.

Another important difference for me was engine access. Whereas there is a large hatch in the cockpit of the IP31, it appeared that all the routine maintenance, which I do myself, would involve hanging over the engine from above. In the IP32, the engine is accessible from the cabin and the quarter berth, which I find better.

Also as Hayden noted, the hull design was reportedly improved and we’ve been perfectly satisfied with the performance. The draft is a bit more than the standard IP31 (4’4” versus 4’0”), which we felt was still shallow enough for our coastal sailing and motoring|sailing the Great Loop if we wanted. I don’t recall any substantive differences in deck layout, except that the IP32 cabin top is taller and a big step up, though not too much so for us.

We still like the IP31 very much, and I’m sure we would have been very happy with any one of several in great condition that we considered. Quite pleased with our decision, however.
