I have just posted a flotilla plan idea into the EVENTS list for summer 2014. Let's sail from Rock Hall, MD to Block Island RI and get a fleet of IPs to travel together. Please add yourself to the event if you are interested in exploring this flotilla. Add here
ipyoa.com/community/events/viewevent/42-...leet-to-block-island

We will departure from Rock Hall, MD late June 2014 and the legs will look like this:
1. Rock Hall MD to CD Canal Engineer Cove
2. CD Canal to Cape May NJ
3. Cape May NJ to Atlantic City NJ
4. Atlantic City NJ to Sandy Hook
5. Sandy Hook to Long Island Sound, Port Washington
6. Port Washington to Duck Island
7. Duck Island to Watch Hill, RI
8. Watch Hill RI to Block Island, RI

Optional route could be direct from Atlantic City NJ to Block Island RI. This is a 200 mile leg.

The above 1-8 legs allow for day trips and places to anchor every night or take a dock at each location. We usually anchor at these places.

Today is October 30, 2013, and we know we are sailing to Block Island next summer, so why not begin now and plan for a flotilla of Island Packet Yachts?

Look HOW FUN...

Hayden;
I might be interested depending the time frame. I race a marshall sanderling in the summer on the barengat bay. That pretty well uses up all the weekends. Yes I am still working. Just a thought you could come in barnagat inlet stay over in tices shoal then work you way up to manasquan inlet then up to sanday hook. The lower bay has 10ft of water easy but after the mattas bridge it get 4-6 ft unless you stay in the ICW. there are plenty of place to go into and hide for a day.
Please let me know when you were going to do this. Maybe we can meet up.

We most likely will go into Atlantic City and then from there, make the total run to Sandy Hook which can be run in almost all daylight hours during the summer. I will look at your locations, and maybe we can connect.
Thanks for the info. I must say, I do not know the NJ coast other than Cape May, Atlantic City and Sandy Hook.

There is a place at Barnegat Light that you can stay in. I don't remember the spot. Dave might be able to give you the exact location.

Hayden: Since our homeport is in New London, CT, we will enjoy meeting the participants in Block Island during your stay. As the plan solidifies, please give report as to the dates that you will stay at Block. Good luck with your plans.

Follow up - if you plan the Long Island Sound route, and if you choose to stop at New London, I can assist you in staying in mooring field on Thames River at my club, Thames Yacht Club or utilizing town moorings/docks available on Thames River via Harbormaster (Dave Crocker @ Crockers Marina - Marina also has docks in Shaw Cove off Thames River - which has very protected dock space 860-443-6304).
Block Island about 23 miles from New London.
Let me know if I can help

Most likely, we will run the Long Island Route, as that makes for a very nice train trip into Mahattan from Port Washington harbor. Radeen love to go to NYC, so this will be part of the trip. So, yes, we will be in Long Island Sound.

As for dates this is still under planning, but we will try to plan it out as we get closer.

Thanks for the offer of help in New London.

One of the goals is also to take in the New London CT. FIREWORKS the week after the 4th. We were there years ago, and these are the best I have ever seen.

I have just posted a blog post about the details of this sail to Block Island and to Sail Fest New London CT. You can see the post and images here:

islandspirit35.blogspot.com/2014/06/block-island-plan-2014.html

here is a copy as well

We will be sailing back to Block Island and going the route of New York Harbor and Long Island Sound. This is a "return & review" trip to see if sailing New England is as wonderful as we remember it to be.

We have not been north (NY, CT, RI, MA) since 2011, so it is time for a review. We know of other Island Packet Yacht Owners that are planning to run north as well, so we may have a FLEET, and an Island Packet mini-vous / rendezvous as we travel. Join in anywhere you can find us, to share an anchorage or sail along.

Here is our plan: (Note: This is via NYC and LIS and return to NJ via the ocean)
  • Thur, June 26 Rock Hall MD to CD Canal Engineer Cove, anchor or dock
  • Fri, June 27 CD Canal to Cape May NJ, anchor or dock at Utsch's Marina, a good fuel stop
  • Sat, June 28 Cape May NJ layday, explore the town
  • Sun, June 29 Cape May NJ to Atlantic City NJ, anchor or dock
  • Mon June 30, Atlantic City NJ to Sandy Hook, long day 12-15 hrs, anchor or dock
  • Tue July 1, Sandy Hook / Atlantic Highlands layday
  • Wed July 2, Sandy Hook (through Hell Gate) to Long Island Sound, Port Washington, mooring balls, anchor or dock
  • Thur-Mon July 3-7 Port Washington Laydays to ride Long Island Railroad into NYC for days exploring The City. Return to boat each night, relax, enjoy Port Washington.
  • Tue July 8 Port Washington heading East to Duck Island, anchor
  • Wed, July 9 Duck Island heading East towards New London CT
  • Wed or Thur July 9-10 New London CT, drop anchor or take a mooring ball or dock
  • Thur to Sun July 10-13 New London CT, SAILFEST, fireworks, festival weekend
  • Mon July 14 Sail to Block Island, or stop in at Watch Hill RI for a beach day
  • July 14 to July 28 Block Island RI based with trips out from there.
  • July 28 - 30 Looking for a weather window to sail offshore back to Cape May NJ
  • Aug 1-3 Cape May NJ, anchor or dock
  • Aug 4 Cape May to CD or Chesapeake Bay
  • Aug 5 Return to Rock Hall, MD

http://islandspirit35.blogspot.com/p/calendar_10.html
All of the above will be actively managed on our BLOG CALENDAR here. We try to manage our travels via this online calendar.

Please NOTE: We have days for weather lay-days if we need them because our first date is New London, CT. Our primary goals are this:
Re-explore NYC from mooring balls in Port Washington, NY, riding the train to the city.
Arrive at New London CT early to be anchored down for SailFest event.
See the fireworks display Sat night on the river in New London CT. Largest ever!
Return to Block Island for life on the hook and Block Island fun.

Note: We have been to all of these places several times and we have anchored at all of them. We rarely take a dock and we rarely take a mooring. We like to anchor and this is our plan once again. If you prefer to dock or take moorings, then here are the Google Map links to show you the locations.
