Tool Kit and Spare Parts was created by Vyg
I am putting together a set of tools and spare parts for new to us IP420. What essential or Island packet specific tools should I get? What spare parts should I alway keep on board and in what quantities? How do you organize tool and parts storage? I am pretty handy when it comes to mechanical, electrical and woodworking but, obviously, all current content of my garage will not fit even into that large boat. :-) We are planning to do coastal cruising till the rest of the year, then go to Bahamas for a few weeks. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Rosty.

There is an easy answer and then there is a more complex answer. This is really an open ended question.

The easy answer is mostly common tools like wrenches, sockets (long and short, standard and metric), screw drivers, pliers, allen wrenches, filter wrench, chisels, small hack saw, small wood saw, painting stuff, sand paper, hammer, wire brush, electric drill, oil extractor and extension cords for starters. But then it gets more complicated by what equipment you have on your boat. If you are starting out I'd keep all the tools you have except for the obvious ones you won't need like shovels, axes, etc. Go the first year and then review what you have.

For spares you need at least 2 of everything: fuel (primary and secondary) and oil filters, alternator belt, water pumps, head pumps, impellor, packing material (1/4"), oil (at least 2 gal of 10w40 and 2 qts of 30w), coolant, spare breakers, washers, screws, WD40, 3-in-1 oil, winch grease, acetone, traclube, oil absorbers, shackles, spare line of various sizes, seizing wire, and again other things depending on the equipment you have.

If you've ever taken a diesel mechanic course they should have given you a starter toolkit list. This all depends on how much of your own work you can do now and expect to in the future. We have an inventory of supplies on board that I will try to condense to what is relevant to you. I'm sure there are people are around with more complete lists but this is really something you need to work out for yourself as you get familiar with living onboard. Most of the stuff is pretty common. I would suggest you buy the Yanmar Parts and Service Manuals and that will give you a good start on the engine. Then look at the 420 owners manual and manuals for all equipment (generators, solar, wind, refrigerator, radio, radar, etc) for ideas of how to do things and work through them yourself and then you will get a better idea.

Well after all that it wouldn't let me upload the file to to message. Said the file type wasn't supported. Anyway, I uploaded to the documents folder. You will find it under 420 titled Boat List I think. There's only a few things in the folder so it should be obvious. I took out all of our food, clothes and personal maintenance type stuff. What's here is all boat stuff. I think it will give you an idea. I did not do a piece inventory of my tools. But I have an engine specific toolbox, one bag of screwdrivers, pliers and grips; of sockets and allen wrenches; one of other tools. If ind that of course screw drivers and pliers are what I need most. Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions feel free to shoot me an email.

Maris:
Great job on sharing your boat inventory list with all of us. That is a very detailed list and also really interesting. That makes sense that you could not share a dot.xlsx file in PM, that is why the document library is there and you also can add files to these forum posts as well. Thank you again:

Here is the link to the shared file:
