Thoughts on this boat sailing on a lake....really slow? I know the IP27 is not a racer, but can it sail in winds under 10 knots? thanks for your help. Any other info you would like to share would be greatly appreciated.

Sure you could sail an IP27 on a lake as long as the lake is large enough to handle a 30 ft sail boat. If it was a lake that would require a lot of short tacks then a full keel boat like the 27 would not be my first choice. I sail my 27 on the upper Chesapeake Bay and the Elk River. Is it "really slow"? Not at all. True it is not a fin keel racer and will not sail like one, but will hold its own with other full keel boats. Due to the full keel it is not a fast tacking boat. Yes it will sail in winds less than 10 knots. The winds are less then 10 most of the time in the upper Chesapeake. It will not point as high as some other boats but I find it to be adequate. Good sails and proper sail trim do make a big differance. I can move along at 3+ in a 5 knot breeze. I do have a spinnaker for down wind sailing and I find it very effective in light air. The 27 is a very stable boat which is nice when the wind does pick up.

Re: Sailing Characteristics Of The IP-27

Prior to purchasing our IP-29, I flew to Houston, TX. to test sail a 1987 IP_27 prior to purchase.
The broker from Mustang Yacht Sales & I took the boat out in 20 MPH winds on Houston Bay, and I must say that this boat is no slouch. She performed beautifully on all points of sail, surprisingly fast, and had this boat the amenities of the IP-29, I would have purchased it and had it shipped to N.Y.
Great sailing boat in high wind conditions!
