What do you consider to be the most useful cruising guides for the Bahamas ?

Carey:

We liked the explorer charts and supplemented those with the MapTech product. While primarily chart kits these both have info on anchorages and harbors etc.

We personally did not care for the Pavlidis Guide.

Explorer's Charts a must. We used Pavlidis' guides as BIBLE!!!! I would never enter a new cut or anchorage in the Exumas or out-islands without studying Pavlidis' info carefully, and he never let me down. His method of providing a waypoint outside the cut and visual info and reference to get through is the only way to go. Don't get caught following your path on the screen while you pass between the reefs!

Bobby,

I couldn't find the Bahamas topic of the past (1-3 years ago)in which you offered to e-mail a copy of the log of your Abacos travels to "Mike". Doing our planning for a 2012 excursion there and maybe the Eluethera Islands. A copy of this trip log and any Eluethera travels would be helpful toward preparing a cruise plan. I think you already have my e-mail address.

Larry:
here is the info I have from Bobby, we plan to follow this type of trip...

start copy
More on the Abaco's.

Once arriving West End we tie up alongside the customs dock (Fuel dock) and also top off the fuel tank. We take a slip for the night there as we really enjoy the Restaurant on premise.

After West end we start out and spend a few days at Great Sale Cay. You can anchor on either the East or West Side of the Cay. No facilities ashore
a nice place to stop.

Allens-Pensacola Cay - nice anchorage and great Beach - good place to look for Hamburger Beans. No facilities ashore

Munjack Cay - nice anchorage, nice beaches, owners are friendly, ask and they will show you the nice veggie garden. Free WiFi when we were there.

Green Turtle Cay - see Careys Comment. When we stopped the Green Turtle Club Marina had a dockage special - for every $ you spend you get a $
credit in the Restaurant. There are several anchorage here and this is a staging area for those headed South through the "Whale". Wrecking Tree Restaurant (New Plymouth).

After clearing the Whale the next stop is Treasure Cay - you can anchor inside the Sea wall here and there is a big Marina in the basin. Laundry, small grocery store, Restaurants, etc.

Cruisers net - Patti (Barometer Bob) daily weather report

There are several stops after leaving treasure Cay and heading South in the Sea of Abaco.

Great Guana Cay - Nippers does a Sunday pig roast that is very good.
Man O War Cay - Interesting town
Hope Town - Light house

Marsh Harbor is a good storm hole - good anchoring and lots of facilities ashore. Once you are South of the Whale you are not more than a days sail from here anywhere in the Abacos. Book exchange, Restaurants, Provisioning. Access to the Airport for visitors or Seaport (Tropical Shipping). You can purchase Internet Access here from Out Island Internet. Some Wifi Readily available most anchorages. The Jib Room seems to be a hang out and then do a weekly BBQ that is good.

Lubbers Quarters - several good anchorages near here - off Elbow Cay, At and South of Tiloo Cut, Tiloo Cay.

Snake Cay - nice place to tour the mangroves.

Lynyard Cay - anchor here on West Side or on Eastern Shore of Great Abaco.

Good fishing outside the reef between Channel Rock and Little Harbor.

Little Harbor - We always enjoyed Pete's Pub - occasional pig roast and Drinko De Mayo (5th of May) party was fun

Provisions are more expensive than the US but with a freezer you should be fine. I like bottled Kalik and the Bacardi Anejo is good and cheap.

Snorkeling - some good spots here but water was not warm enough for us till May so we wore our 3 mil wet suits.

Hope this helps.

If you plan to cruise primarily Abacos, get Steve Dodge's guide.

Just know that the pristine waters of Exumas lie only a few days
sail from the cut at Little Harbor, if you have the time. As nice
as Abacos are, there is no comparison.

Hello All,

That was my next question. Transiting from Little Harbor to the Exumas? Right now our thought is to depart Little Harbor and arrive at the souhtwest end of Royal Island chain off the northwest end of Eluethera Island and then proceed northeast into the Royal Island Harbor area. After that it looks like we could proceed south past the end of Current Island and Six Shilling Cay and then cut through Flemming Channel transiting from there to? Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

You've got the right idea. I will be on Contented Turtle this weekend
and will retreive her logs and get back to you. The first of my 4
winters cruising south to Exumas we went from
Little Harbor to Royal Island (Don't forget to check out Spanish Wells)
then through Current cut to Rock Sound, then over to Highbourne Cay, if I
remember correctly. Thats the 'cruise Eleuthra' route if you can take your time.

I did the Flemming Channel route coming back north the last spring we traveled
to Bahamas in 2007. That sail was the highlight of my entire sailing experiences
to date, a beam reach at hull speed from N. Exumas all the way to Royal Island. It
was a perfect day and a perfect way to end my Exumas cruise. I must warn you that it also
was the most challenging sail as well, travelling a good part of the day in often 7-8 foot of
swimming pool clear water over the 'Dreaded Yellow Banks' and guiding Contented Turtle
continuously around coral heads most of the way until reaching deep water.

I truely will remember that day always and think about it alot, and thanx for
reminding me about it!!!!! I must admit that I'm still not sure I should have done it,
and certainly did not feel confident enough the first few trips south to attempt it.

Anyway, I'll get back to you Monday.

Larry

For some reason, I cannot locate my logbook for that years cruise. But I can
tell you that those were the stops we took on my first foray into Exumas, cruising
through Eleuthra. We did that the first year, but on later cruises we went directly
from Miami to Nassau (overnight there, check in and leave ASAP). Then from Nassau
its a daysail to Highbourn Cay and the heavenly Exumas. One year we spent a few
hours in Nassau at the dock to check in then left immediately for overnight at
Rose Island, just to get out of the harbour. If you want to see Abacos
then just jump over from Highbourn to Rock Sound, Eleuthra on your way back, the
reverse of what I described earlier.

However, if you have not yet had any experience 'reading' the water, and passing
through a few cuts, would highly reccomend you go the Abaco route, get your 'feet
wet' there and pick up a boat to travel with. Thats what we did - its a steep
learning curve, and you want to definitely get it right the first time! And
the Cruising Guide that I felt was Invaluable for all this was Pavlidis'. Get
'On and Off the Beaten Path' and 'Exumas' - they really will help you with your
planning, and travels.

Oh one more thing - try to link up with an IP to cruise with - It makes it much more fun!!!
And start the 'pet immigration' process now, if you have one - it can take 3-6 months
to get your paperwork finished

Regards
Jesse
