Cleanout for fresh water tank. was created by corbrob
I have a 1993 IP35. Lately my fresh water line has been clogging up from debris in the tank. I do not see a cleanout port and was wondering if anyone can enlighten me? Thanks Bob Corbett

Bob:

Sounds like aluminum chloride crystals. These are formed in the IP aluminum tank when unfiltered city water is added to the tank and over time the chlorine in the water reacts with the tank and you end up with the white stuff. Typically it plugs the pickup tube, any filters, messes up the pump etc.

I have a whole house filter that I use to catch any gunk and use an RV filter (charcoal) to remove chlorine if I add city water to the tank.

There is no inspection port so the best you can do is try to pump out as much gunk as you can and try not to add any chlorinated water ever again.

Bobby. Thanks for this which I was afraid of! I think I will go down through the float gauge port when the tank is fairly empty with a suction of some sort to see if I can't pull some of that stuff out. Cheers Bob

That is probably your best bet. I bought a small screw on canister filter and installed it ahead of our pump. The filter has a plexiglass bowl so I can see any sediment as it collects. After switching to the water maker as our primary source of water and filtering any other water through the charcoal filter before putting it in the tank we have really seen a significant decrease in the white crud coming out of the tank.

I too use to have this problem on IpP35-165 1994 model and as Bobby states, it is from the chlorine in city water. Once you start using a Camco Water Filter on your fill hose BEFORE filling the tank, it will eventually go away. I have not had a problem since using this, and eventually all the crystals will filter out.
$17.00 per filter, I use one per year from Walmart, see the camping section.

Something wrong with the specs on this filter - indicates 100 micron filter capability. Most sediment/chlorine filters are spec'd in the range of 2 - 5 microns and are only good for a few thousand gallons.

Is this the right filter?

The company says this removes chlorine and that is what I use it for. It has done this and has stopped the alum chloride crystals that use to build up in the tank. Call the company here for more specs:

Understand but given the lack of info on line on this filter and without knowing how much chlorine it removes I would be suspicious.

Just sent you a personal email on this filter. This is similar to what we use and uses the replaceable element.

Bobby & Hayden... Thanks for your help here. I took a wet vac, went down thru the gauge hole and you wouldn't beleive the stuff that I sucked up out of there!! The tank is now empty. Anyway I am confident that when I refill (with an in-line filter I found aboard) that things will be much better. On another related note I called the guys at PPL. Not only do they not ship to Canada but they don't take Canadian credit cards. Will work my way around that one but it seems to me that the CX90 .90 Micron Ceramic filter is the way to go. Cheers Bob

Bobby... Thanks that is very kind of you. I have a US address in ME. My sister is a US resident so I will ask her to order it and have it shipped to my US address but I REALLY appreciate the offer. Best Regards Bob
