Removing a 3JH2e Yanmar Engine from an Island Packet 35

Sunday - October 25, 2015Views: 12171Taken at Rock Hall, MD
We had an over heat situation, our first one, and within 10 minutes the issue damaged our 3JH2e engine. We were able to run 6 miles back to our home dock and investigate the cause. We found a severely restricted exhaust mixing elbow and one impeller fin broken as well. We think between these two issues, the overheat happened and the heat then caused the hung exhaust valve along with a possible wrist pin or piston bearing failure. We removed the engine for rebuild and a full evaluation. These photos show the process of removing a Yanmar 3JH2E diesel engine out of the Island Packet 35 using the main halyard and a spare halyard for lifting as well as two jib sheets for pulling aft and triangulating for lifting control and placement. Overall this method worked very well. The engine will NOT come out of the engine room with the motor mounts on the block. Plus we removed the transmission for less weight. We also had the motor torn down for head inspection and for a valve job since the cylinder #3 had low compression. I am not sure if the engine will go in our out with the heat exchanger installed. We will find out when our engine comes back after rebuild. Right now we are evaluating the situation. We are using CHRIS OLIVER diesel mechanic for our engine rebuild, and we are working with our very good friend and local mechanic DON BERGAN in Rock Hall, MD.
