Signal Flags

Sunday - October 25, 2015Views: 805Taken at Scarsdale, NY
I've taught myself how to sew over the past three winters, using a Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ-1 machine and related tools and accessories, Sailrite's excellent printed and DVD instructions and on-line instructional videos. My practice project has been to make a set of 40 signal flags. They're not mission critical -- at least not on my boat. If I make a mistake and have to start over with a particular flag, I haven't wasted too much time or material. And they require a tremendous variety of sewing skills: layout, cutting with snippers, scissors and a hot knife, different stitches (straight and zig zag), different seams (hidden, flat felled), different hems (folded, rolled), and so on. Of course, I also had to learn how to use and maintain the machine. I've finally finished. You may well ask, what will I use them for? Apart from dressing ship for parties and special occasions, I'm not sure, but at least when I dress ship I'll be able to use them all!
