420 Holding Tank Replacement

Holding tank replacement and tank monitor on IP420-39, Winterset.

The holding tank on a 420 is partially below the forward berth and stateroom floor; this is not an easy refit. First the floor must be cut as well as the area below the berth where the drawers are located. The old aluminum tank removed (in pieces) and new tank fixed in place. We had all waste lines replaced at the same time. The new plastic tank was custom built to the specs of the original provided by the IP factory with the addition of a 4" inspection port. The inspection port is visible through and access panel below the berth.

I installed an Electrosense waste tank monitor, which is a two part system with 5 sensor rods in a round cap and a 9V battery powered status panel. The parts are connected by standard Cat5 LAN cable. I had Electrosense install the sensor rods in a 4" replacement cap for my inspection port. The rods are custom sized to match the holding tank geometry, in our case, based on the tank drawings/specs from IP.

I mounted the panel in a frame so I only had to drill a small hold for the cable and positioned the panel near the tank, above the forward drawer under the berth.
