Dinghy Derrick

Sunday - October 25, 2015Views: 1914
We've been thinking about what to do with our dinghy when we finally break away from the marina and head off-shore. I know it should be stowed on deck for long crossings and I also didn't want to invest in davits or an arch and have it hanging off the stern when tooling around the islands. We could use the mainsail boom but that seems cumbersome. What I had in mind was some kind of derrick. I came across an inexpensive used spinnaker pole at a yard sale and things kinda fell in place. I had Atlantic Spars in Annapolis make up a double D fitting for lifting to keep the load off the pole. 6:1 block and tackle make for easy lifting and we use the spare main halyard for the derrick hoist. The dinghy is a hard bottom inflatable and stores flat in a bag that fits nicely across the cabin roof under the main boom. We've used the derrick a couple times now and it's easy enough for one person to do although two would speed up the launch or recover process.
