Galley Upgrade

Sunday - October 25, 2015Views: 3410Taken at Chesapeake Bay
We've been living aboard for three years now and have gotten to know our 420 pretty well. For a while we thought we might sell her and find a boat that would suit us better but we discovered there is no such boat. At least in our price range. Instead we decided to improve what we have and make her work better for us.A major sticking point for Cheri has been the galley. There are some places in the cabinets that are next to impossible to get at. She felt frustrated with the size of the sink and the layout of some of the cabinets. Since Cheri enjoys cooking we decided it made sense for us to make some design changes and try to improve the galley. We took the boat to Hinckley Yachts in Whitehall, Maryland to do the work. We're replacing the counter top with Corian and modifying the cabinets that sit above it. They'll be extended to the underside of the deck, eliminating the small shelf space, which we found to be pretty useless. They'll also be brought out about 1.5 inches to add more depth. With these two changes we'll be able to add a shelf inside to really increase the storage in these cabinets. There will also be a cabinet added behind the stove. Beneath the oven is a storage area that is difficult to use. Unless something is right at the front it's bound to disappear. That space will be converted to a drawer. There will be a cabinet added behind the ladder at the companionway also. We're having the lid of the freezer/fridge split in two and the strut will be removed to allow the lids to open all the way back for better access. We changed the small double sink out to a single one that's slightly larger and the counter top will extend out to the left of it by about five inches. There's also a slot in the counter top over by the fridge that'll hold the knives.Hopefully with these changes we'll lower the frustration level and get better use of the galley.
