Deck Collar Pin and Mast Caulking

When Mack Sails / Mack Yacht Services replaced our hurricane-damaged mast with a new mast, I drilled the new powder coated deck collar and I caulked the mast the way I like to do this. I use Boat Life caulk and 4" mast boot tape and it works great. This photo essay shows the deck collar mast pin that many IP owners are not aware of. We also find that many yards do not replace this pin when replacing an IP mast. The purpose of the deck collar mast pin is to make the deck more stiff as the rig is tensioned and as it is sailed. This deck collar pin makes a triangle via the pin and the side shrouds. As the rig is tensioned, the deck tends to flex upward, this deck collar mast pin prevents the deck from flexing upward. One other item I add is a large band clamp that will prevent the pin from moving. Once this is in place then I add rigging tape over the clamp. Next, I caulk the collar and mast area (usually there is a rubber wedge placed in between the mast and the collar, but on this mast collar job the area was very tight so we just added caulk. After caulking, we then add 4" mast boot tape to finish the job. We also have a canvas mast boot, but that is really not needed. This is a clean way to do the mast collar pin and mast deck seal.
