Security Enhancements

Over the summer of 2016 we made security enhancements in contemplation of our Caribbean trip. On the hatches we installed 3/8" aluminum bars set into extruded aluminum brackets that are screwed into the hatch frame and were inserted with locktite so while they are removable it won't be done easily. On our large hatch we have 2 bars and on the smaller ones we have one so the maximum opening is about 6" which should be too small for anyone that would reasonably try to enter. We've heard where they try to drop kids in but it would have to be a really small kid who would then probably not be able to open the companionway. The bars in our sleeping cabin are removable and we keep them out most of the time for emergency exit and I use those hatches for the spinnaker and will insert them when needed. They are removable with 2 screws in the bottom that are not readily apparent from above. We also made a security door for the companionway to slide in and secure by locking the barrel bolt on the hatch. The door is made of 12 gauge stainless steel woven wire cloth with 1/2" mesh welded into an angle iron frame with a bug screen on the inside contained by 1/2" of steel welded to the frame. There is also a piece of steel across the middle and a hasp welded to the top so it could be locked from the outside when we aren't on the boat but allows ventilation. While nothing is fool proof we believe this will either discourage bad guys or at least slow them down enough that if we are sleeping we will hear them and wake up to deal with them from a secure position.
