2012 Projects - Batteries

Sunday - October 25, 2015•Views: 911••Taken at Punta Gorda, FL•
On our recent trip to the Abacos earlier this year, Bill decided we needed a few new & improved things on the boat.

First, our wind generator broke not once but 3 times! The last time it was repared the guy put bolts to contnect the tails together, but used bolts that were too small for the holes, so they kept breaking through the holes. Then, our start bank died on us, so we had to use the house bank to start the engine. Which started draining the house bank. So we were always running the engine to keep the batteries charged. And with all the problems with the batteries, we burnt out our1000 watt inverter. (We also lost a bolt to the engine, but after a day or soof my learning new words from Bill ... he & I were able to replace the engine bolt. Not a fun job by any means!

So for the last few weeks, in the 100 degree heat index, 80% & above humidity & severe t-storms - Bill decided he needed to start repairs. So needless to say he has been working really hard.

He bought ALL new batteries; start bank & house bank. The start bank was replaced with the same - Altima 1000 Blue Tops (2) 50 amp hours each., The house bank has 6 Lifeline AGM 125 Amps each. These are probably overkill, but now we can use the A/C for 4-5 hours on the batteries if we need/want, & an unlimited time if we run the engine!

He put 4 of the AGMs' 31s' in my galley cabinet (not too happy about losing space in my galley, but what can you do, right?) & the other 2 31s' are in a locker under the aft berth. All the batteries are connected under the cabinet in the galley. There are photos showing the how the positive post are connected to one side of the cabinet and the negative post are connected on the opposite side of the canbinet to a negative post. Also, under the aft berth in another locker are the start batteries. The start batteries are the same Altima 1000 Blue Top 50 ahs. (These batteries were put on the boat 14 years ago. So we decided to keep the same brand.)/wires

The lines going out the back of the cabinet connect the batteries to the battery charger, fridge, emon and inverter, etc. (another project /album).

Now to the next project ... replacing the inverter!
