Many sailboats here seem to spend all their time in San Francisco Bay, maybe occasionally venturing as far north as San Pablo Bay. But if you keep going across San Pablo Bay and through the Carquinez Straits you reach the Delta. The sun gets hot, and while there is lots of wind it's often directly ahead or astern. But there are seemingly endless sloughs to explore, great nature watching, some welcoming towns and marinas, and a wonderful slow pace of life.
