Solar Panel on Kato Davits

Friday - September 4, 2009Views: 10588
I talked to Norm Pierce at length and looked at all different types of solar mounts and decided to fabricate my own mounting brackets to fit the top of the existing Kato dinghy davits. I started with heavy duty "U" channel aluminum (1x1x2) to use as cross braces on the panel and attachment points to the davits. Since we only use a small amount of DC power every day I settled on one 130watt Kyocera panel which will mount laterally on top of the davits.

The mounting assembly is made of 1 1/4" jaw clamps for the top of the davits with the rest of the system based on 1" stainless Steel tubing and bimini/rail fittings.

Solar controller is the highly efficient NC-25 controller enclosed in a waterproof box which includes a 15 amp circuit breaker that will be mounted in the port lazarette.

Power cable from the panel to the controller is #10 2 conductor round cable which will tie into the existing DC charge cable in the lazarette.

Additional photos will be posted after installation on the boat in Grenada in November.
