Romancing the Stone in Cartagena

Estrellita has been cruising the islands of Bonaire and Curacao for the past month and has now settled in the harbor at Cartagena for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
In Bonaire we rendezvoused with our longtime friends Mike and Jenni Stanfield. We took Mike, Jenni and two friends of theirs, Iris and Sabina on a sunset sail to enjoy the wonderful weather. Unfortunately the breeze was very, very light. Fortunately, we have a light air drifter that saved the day and kept us moving, albeit slowly, under sail.
Next stop was Cartagena for Christmas. The wall was built around the city of Cartagena in the 1600’s to protect from English, French and other attackers intent on sacking the city and taking the gold that the Spanish were harvesting from the new world. The history of the area, architecture and people make this a wonderful stop for Christmas. Cartagena is absolutely the highlight of our trip so far.
