An alternative for smaller Packets to a central air conditioning system is using a "window shaker," in the companionway. I use an 8000 BTU window air conditioner both dockside (using shore power) and at anchor powering it with a Honda 2000i generator. Total cost is about $150 for the A/C and $800 for the generator. Certainly not as ansthetically pleasing as a built in system, but it is affordable and suitable for the smaller boats.
