Mixing Elbow - 2900 hrs/11 years

Thursday - March 11, 2010Views: 5348
Thinking that my mixing elbow was long overdue for replacement, despite no changes in engine operation temperature or exhaust performance, I pulled it and it seems to be exceptionally clean and free from any corrosion or blockage. Either at a diesel seminar at the 2008 BLISS rendezvous or at the Mack Boring 3-day Yanmar course I recall seeing a mixing elbow with corrosion/blockage. Not a pretty sight and the potential for catastrophic failure has always loomed ominously. This is the bronze mixing elbow and I see no reason to replace it at this point. PPerhaps a combination of a properly pitched prop and regular 10 minute periods of 3000+ rpm work for the engine will do a good job of keeping the elbow clean ? I do no "battery charging" with the engine running only for that purpose.
