IP38-138 Estrellita Haulout in Malaysia

Here is a photo set from our haulout in Rebak Marina in Langkawi Malaysia. You will notice right away that it is a nice yard. A crew of 6 guys to haul the boat including a swimmer to make sure that everything looks good below the water. That is exceptional. Everything is deliberate and coordinated. The Team Leader is a 10year veteran at Rebak. IP folks will notice that they used 3 straps. I imagine that will fuel some debate. I was told that they were unhappy with using only 2 straps on our hull design even when tying the straps together. For the return to the water they tied the front two straps to prevent the front strap from creeping up the bow in the still fresh, slippery, paint.

The Trinidad paint we applied 3 and a half years ago held out well. Notice we painted a black telltale coat below blue to show wear and that worked well. We repeated the process this time. We used a local paint that only cost $125us for a 4 liter pale and hope it works ok. The Trinidad was something like $260us a gallon 3 years ago and not available here anyway, so we worried it out and went with the local. We will probably haul in the Med next year for the winter, so we can repaint there if we need to.

We bounced off a reef in Palau last year and had to put a couple strips of glass on the keel. Also, one of the rudder voids we filled 3 years ago had a really fine, hairline, crack. We ground it out to make sure it wasn’t structural, and drilled some holes in the lower part of the rudder looking for water. Didn’t find any and the crack went nowhere so we filled the exploration holes with thickened epoxy and glassed the beveled out crack. “Paint it and Ship It” as Amy likes to say.
