Icebox rebuild - Gra'inne

Monday - December 23, 2002Views: 12457
Before going cruising we knew that we would have to rebuild the existing Ice Box on our 350. Our goal was to make an energy efficient unit that would provide for a freezer and reefer section, use only one compressor, and utilize spill over cooling of the reefer from the freezer. We also wanter individual doors for each compartment and a gasket seal on the doors.

I did not rip the existing tub or insulation out but decided to add 1" R30 vacuum panels and also some pink foam board to the inside of the existing compartment.

The vacuum panels are covered with 1/2" foam and 1/2" plywood then a waterproof fiberglass liner that is sealed with 5200 at the joints.

The heart of the system is the Frigoboat K-50 compressor, the keel cooler, in freezer evaporator plate, Smart Speed Controller to control compressor run speed (energy efficiency), and digital thermostat/controllers for the compressor and spill over fan.
