Packing Nut Adjustment 101

CBREEZE was leaking around the steering shaft so I decided to tighten up the packing nut to stem the tide a little.

Probably had not been adjusted since new in 91 so neither the jam nut nor the packing nut were about to budge.

After a frustrating hour or so (and I have reasonable access to the area) I hit upon a different tool.

Had to turn down the air pressure to keep this monster under control but a couple of seconds and off comes the packing nut. The rest was history as they say. Could also work on a difficult prop shaft packing nut. Just file a small groove on the end of the nut flat to catch the blade.
