IP32 anchor chain length

Hello, I recently bought my IP32 and am getting familiar with all its systems. My specific question now has to do with the amount of anchor chain I can reasonably hold on the boat. Currently there is 18 ft of chain (3/8 inch, I think) and x amount of rope rode. I would like to go to all chain and was wondering if 100ft of 3/8 chain would be too much for this size boat. In talking to the folks on the dock, there is apparently a weight issue if you put too much chain in the bow. I have the Lofrans Cayman windlass which seems to work fine.

Any thoughts on how much chain I could comfortably hold? Also, any Lofrans dealers in Florida? I would like to add a remote to my windlass.

5/16 seems to be chain of choice for your boat, Marshall. At least that's what I've seen over and over again as cited as the chain folks are using. It'll be a bit lighter than 3/8. Note, however, that the gypsy on the windlass needs to fit the chain properly. I'd suggest that you check to see what size the gypsy is - and then either use that size chain, or get your chain of choice and change the gypsy if it's not the correct size.

I've got an IP32 also, and have 200 ft of 5/16 ISO grade 43.

Thanks Plumbob. Very helpful. I'll check my existing chain size and if not 5/16 will get a new gypsy to match and order at least 100 - 150ft of new 5/16. Good to know the boat can handle the weight.

Any suggestions for optimal chain length for my IP-31 #182? Can it handle the weight of 150' of 5/16 Chain?

Hi, I have an IP32. I bought 100' of 5/16th chain and added 100 ft of rode. I wish I would have bought 150' of chain. My boat can easily handle another 50' of chain. I don't believe weight would be a problem. But I am no expert.
