The motor of my Simpson Lawrence Anchorman Sprint 900 Windlass just died last trip out. I would like to replace this with a new vertical windlass. I have an IP35 and will be installing a heavier model, however I am lost as to which manufacturer/model to go with. So far considering Maxwell, Lewmar, Lofrans, and Ideal. Has anyone done something similar or have any recommendations? Push come to shove I will probably go with the Maxwell..Thoughts? Thanks.

I would replace this with an on deck, horizontal Lofrans Tigress. I too had the SL1000 and when it died I added the Tigress. It is hands down the best windlass, and many owners seem to agree. First off, it is easy to install because you just bolt it down. Then the wiring connections are all done topside on deck. I was able to keep my old SL foot switches and I replaced the solenoid and the wiring up to the deck from there. It covered the hole of the SL 1000. Maybe a plate would make it a little bit better, but I found this a great windlass to have. I have now replaced the brushes in this unit as well and that was not too difficult either. The main reason these break down is the carbon brushes go. Every motor like these will have a way to replace the brushes. With the unit up on the deck it was easy to simply pull the cover and then pull the motor, AFTER you PUMP out the oil!.

If I were doing this all again, I would do this same windlass, the Lofrans Tigress in a heart beat. It is simply a great machine.

Here is the photo essay of when we installed ours on IP35-165

I have a 380 and replaced my SL with a Lewmar V2. I don't know how the chain lockers compare so I don't know how much I can help. It certainly was not a drop in the way I did it.... but i tend to way over engineer things. If you have enough room the Lewmar has some advantages because the motor actually sits horizontally and eliminates "the salt water dripping down the motor housing problem".

Personally if I had a 35 I would go with Hayden's favorite the Lofgrans Tigress. There a lots of advantages to the horizontal windlass. Your 35 has much more bow sprit than my snub nose 380 so I didn't really have a choice.

Let me know if you want to see the install picts and vids. I'll get off my butt and go find a WIFI for the upload.
