Dual chain v. Chain to starb, chain + plait to port

Wrestling with replacing frozen Maxwell horizontal 2200 windlass. Lofrans Tigress seems to only come with chain to starboard, line capstan to port. Currently have 300 feet of 5/16 HT chain on both sides with Maxwell. I don't mind reducing weight, but don't believe I can pursuade the Admiral to pull in 30-50 feet of chain by hand on port side at the end of 200 feet of plait.

How do others handle combination chain / plait (line) on the side with capstan only? Is there a conversion to add chain gypsy to port side of Tigress? Price difference between Tigress and simply putting a new Maxwell 2200 is $2500 more to go with Maxwell.

The upgrade to the Tigress is the Lofrans Falkon Horizontal Windlass which has to chain gypsies. The problem is this unit is way more expensive, like $6,000.



We have the IP 35 and have all rope on the port side with 20 feet of chain and then on the starboard side 250 feet of 5/16" chain on a 55lb Rocna. In 15 years of use, we have never used the second anchor.

Hayden, I take it the all chain and Rocna is the primary and the rope chain is your secondary, or is it the reverse.

My 250 feet of chain and 55 lb Rocna are primary used 100% of the time on the Tigress. Rope and 44 lb Bruce is my back up not used in 15 years.
