Hi,
I would like some knowledgeable input on an appropriate Windlass, chain and anchor for cruising the Bahamas.
I have chosen 5/16 HT chain, one hundred and 75 feet. In addition I would like to mount a Lewmar H3 with Gypsy and drum. I want to use all chain rode. The anchor I have chosen is the Manson supreme 35 pounds.
We intend to cruise the Bahamas, and I am wondering about the chain length. I am also wondering if the Windlass will fit well over the anchor locker.

thanks
keith

Selecting a horizontal windlass is a great decision and all chain is also a great choice. Manson anchor is a take off from the ROCNA, I would go with the original there.

I also just looked on Defender, and I see that the Lofrans Tigres Horizontal Electric Windlass is less money than the H3. I have the Lofrans with a Rocna and all chain and it has been fantastic.

Yes, your windlass will fit on the bow, just keep it as far back as you can so the chain drop is back into the anchor locker. Some have built up the deck and placed the windlass aft the teak sprit to help drop into the locker.

Thanks hayden,
Regarding the price, when you put the lograns and the Lewmar H3 into the cart, the H3 price drops almost$700, making it about $150 lass than the Tigres.
Ill check out the Rocna.

Knowing what I know...I would buy the LOFRANS, hands down! I also would buy the ROCNA.

Hayden, what do you think about the length of chain, 175 ft?

Keith:
175' of chain is good. I have 250' of 5/16" HT chain but really never go beyond 175-200. This is only in deep water, and with a serious storm. I will say, you will never be sorry you bought the biggest anchor the bow can take, and the all chain rode. When you need it, is worth every penny!

Yes, I al 100% happy with the Lofrans Tigress Windlass, I would buy it again in a second with zero reservations. Hands down the best item. Look no more. Just do it.

I have install photos of our upgrade from the Simpson Lawrence 1000 to the Lofrans Tigress here:

Thanks Hayden,

So it looks like you managed to mount it right over the existing deck cutout for the Sprint/SL winch - no additional stainless plating above the deck necessary?

Yes, the Tigress just so covered the cutouts of out SL 1000 so no need for us to make a plate to cover holes. Even if a plate is needed, that would be no big deal. This simply bolts down with 4 bolts.
