Replace standing rigging? IP35-165, 1994

Our rig was taken down in 2002 for inspection and now it is season 2011. Since 2002, we have sailed about 1,500 miles per summer between Chesapeake Bay and Maine. Our boat has never been in the Caribbean, but it has seen lots of ocean from Cape May, NJ and north.

So, do you think it is time to replace the standing rigging?

Have you replaced yours? If so on what schedule?

Thank you.

Hayden

Here is a photo from 2002 when we inspected...

Bid came in from Seco South, they make the rigs for packet and many other boats. Price is $1,800 for Schaeffer roller furling rigs and $200 more for Harken furling due to the threaded stud needed on the Harken units. This threaded stud they have to buy from Harken. This price seems very fair.

So, what are you looking for when you decide it's time to replace the standing rigging? Ours is original, 2001, and shows a light dusting of rust in places, between the strands. The ends looked OK to me when we had the mast down last winter. I was told not to be concerned about the light rust, that it wasn't reason to replace the rigging. What are you seeing? What gets you to the point where ponying up $1800 seems like a fair deal? Of course I'm just kidding about the price. The standing rigging don't come cheap. I'm probably going to get serious about replacing ours at some point in the next few years because of our upcoming cruise and I'd like to know what to look for.

I understand that rigging in heavy salt conditions like the Caibbeam should be replaced every 10yrs. Ones in less salty areas like the Chesapeake Bay not so often. What to look for is a very close up inspection of the swaged on end fittings. These down near the chainplates will develop hairline cracks which are hard to see, look at these and that is one concern. Then at the top end you have the same type of pressed on fitting. It is my understanding that these fail and thats the reason to replace the standing rigging. Our 35 is a 1994 sailed in the bay most of its life, and now we have the last 10 summer of sailing New England where the ocean off RI is vety salty. My rig looks good, i dont see any cracks but maybe its time....

I have had discussions with Hayden on the side, but have been lax in updating the post. I also have the IP-35 but from 1989 and the boat was based out of Florida with its prior owner. The rigging has just been inspected and "appears" in good condition for its age. This has been fine for the Chesapeake, but I am planning on doing longer range offshore sailing next year and beyond. The short version of the answer from my standpoint is: If the rigging is old enoungh to drink legally and you are planning an offshore passage - replace it. The chain plates are a particular area of focus but very hard to evaluate fully. I will be discussing this with my rigger and the yard this winter.

How did this upgrade/ replacement work out?
People do not commonly replace standing rigging up here in Atlantic Canada
But it is seldom hot here...
Did you use any "Penetrant Dye" to inspect the standing rigging. Fittings?
Penetrant dye is used professionally regularly, it does a good job of highlighting and tiny 'microcracks '
Did you find any cracks after you replaced the rigging?
Tks

We now have the rig off, and we will finally be replacing the 20 year old standing rigging with OEM, SecoSouth.com rigging. We did not use die, we are simply going on age and think it is time to replace the rigging based on the 20 years. I do think we have one crack in one swagged fitting, but we will just replace all with new.

I replaced my rigging last year. I did not use dye but did it as a precaution. Stainless steel does corrode when exposed to salt water and kept from oxygen. The fittings and chain plates are most susceptible.

We just replaced our original standing rigging on our IP35 1989, the thing my rigger told me to look for and where rigging would fail, is to look at where the cable enter the swage studs, if there's a lot of corrosion there then there's a chance of failure. My had corrosion there and slight corrosion on the rigging its self! We replaced one at a time just me and my wife, the tricky ones where the upper shrouds, we used a 100' of 3/8" line to secure the mast, but still a little scary up there pulling the shroud out the top of the mast! Total cost was 375.00 for both back stays, 575.00 for lower shrouds, 450.00 for upper shrouds! 175.00 for baby forestay! Still have the roller furling for stay left!

I just became the new owner of IP 380 #19, currently lying in Greece. The rig is still original, so two decades old but after a visual inspection still in remarkable good shape. Since I intend to do some ocean crossings it still might be advisable to replace it now or soon. Any thoughts on that?

So far, I got 2 quotes from Greek riggers, 5000€ and 6000€ respectively, including 24% Greek VAT. Does anyone have an idea of the approximate cost in other places, like the Caribbean, U.S. or so? It might be worthwhile for me to sail to somewhere where they offer good work for a fair price.
Thanks for sharing the quotes you know of.
