What GPS do I get?? was created by capediver714
Im hoping to get a new GPS before our trip to Nantucket next week. Personally I like the Garmin GPSmap 441 chartplotter, which I found on thegpsstore.com for $420. $100 cheaper than west marine. However, my close cousin and avid boater tells me that having a handheld is "worth it's weight in gold." Because its mobile, you dont have to wire it in, you can hook it up to your PC to download date, etc. The handheld Ive picked out is the Garmin GPSmap 76CSx which comes with the US bluchart G2 package for $350. I still like the mountable chartplotter because the screen is bigger and the resolution is great, but I cant decide! Have to make a decision asap because we are leaving next Thurs. Any insight from you seasoned sailors?? Any suggestions other than these two units? Thanks!

this is late to reply ...but our 6 year old 76c garmin is one of my favorite things on the boat. We have a bracket and plug in the main bunk area and I can watch us safely at anchor using it for anchor monitor.
On voyages we only use this one or our newer Colorado 400 in the cockpit instead of all the power hungry units. Just turn everything off except the little gps set on speed, course and miles to go. We have crossed oceans like this.

You made a good choice.
