Bottom Paint, Petit Trinidad Lasts for YEARS!

Thursday - November 4, 2010Views: 10249
I just completed (11/1/10) a full year study/project on Petit Trinidad bottom paint. The project was to see if the paint really will NOT work after left on the hard over the winter. Petit says that after 2 months of yard storage, the paint will no longer work and a new coat is needed. So I decide to test this and guess what? They are WRONG. Petit Trinidad hard epoxy paint which has 65% cuprous oxide does NOT stop working when left on the hard over the winter. The paint worked perfectly, matter of fact, it worked as well as the new test coat did. Here is what I did for my test. #1. I sanded the starboard side with 120 grit to activate the paint. #2. I left the port side untouched. #3. I used one quart of new Trinidad and painted 1 foot down all the way around. Then I left this boat in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay 2010, which turned out to be a very bad year for bottom paint. Yards reported lots of growth when hauled. I never hired a diver, and never did a short haul. Boat was in from April to Nov. We then hauled, and I shot these photos! PROOF Petit Trinidad WILL WORK perfectly after a full winter in the yard. There is NO difference on the port side to the starboard side, or on the new paint at the waterline. Matter of fact, it looks like I can go many years like this, and that is exactly my plan! So save your money, it is a recession, so why waste money on $300/gal paint when the copper is still there doing its job. Science Project a success, DONE!
