New HP DM1z Laptop is GREAT was created by hayden
I have purchased a new laptop to replace my old one and I was looking
for a smaller more portable unit for the boat. I have been using PC
laptops over desktop units for years, and these have always been 15"
screens. Now you notice most web sites DO NOT cover these large
screens, web page designs have settled in on 960 pixels wide, so when
you run a large laptop screen the web page is centered in the middle
and there will be all the fill in space to the sides of the web page.
So that lead me to think....WHY would I want such a large laptop
screen? OK....if you watch movies....yea....but I don't watch movies
on laptops.

This then lead me to looking into NETBOOKS which are about 10"
screens. They are nice and small, but they are usually very low in
specs and very slow machines. So, I dropped the netbook idea.

Next came the study of the one step up from the netbooks and this
takes you into the mini laptops with the 11" to 12" screens. That's
what I bought and it is darn near perfect for a boat laptop and for
portability. I ended up buying the HP dm1z which has an 11" screen,
4GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive! all for about $500.00!

With a 500GB drive I am finally able to keep my collection of 50,000
digital pictures all on the laptop. I have taken all these digital
photos myself since 2001, and I have been storing them on a 250GB
portable WD USB drive. These pictures take up 110 GB, so I have plenty
of room to grow. I also store and back up IPphotos, which is now
approaching 11,000 photos! This data is only about 2 BG due to the
site re-sampling and resizing the images as they come in. Then I store
and back up IPYOA which is now approaching 1GB. So, with this new
small mini laptop I can manage, store and back up my entire collection
of photos plus IPphotos plus IPYOA along with about 13 other web site
jobs AND I STILL HAVE tons of room!!!...That is just unreal. Of course
then I have to maintain a backup copy of this laptop data so that's
where I use that free sync program we talked about last week.

This is what I do with a laptop and this gives you an idea how well
this unit is working....

Surf the web with Firefox browser
Digital photos, 50,000+
Digital video, 1,000+
Website backups via FTP
Google Apps,Blogger, Picasa, Maps/Earth, Gmail, and news
Outlook Email, and simple office docs, but this is moving to Google
All my web design work and services using FIREFOX web browser
Sea CLEAR PC navigation
Skype, now and then

That is about it....so for this kind of work, I am thrilled with this
new laptop. It is working out well.

If you are looking for a small laptop that is way more powerful than a
netbook but small like that, then look at the HP Pavilion dm1z series.
I am 100% satisfied.

OK, I have used this small HP DM1z for a week now and I still like it, except they should warn you that it may make you GO BLIND due to the small print. I know....CTRL plus + key and the font increases. but then you run out of real estate and you have to scroll a lot.

In testing out and working this unit over, I have spent the week building two web sites on the unit and also processing a large batch of photos for one customer. I also spent the week using our web here and IPmail plus all my Gmail, all processed on this DM1z.

It is fast, and very small. I bought this to use a great portable unit that I can travel with since the iPad will NOT handle my large cache of photos and web site backups and s FireFox proper web browser, sio I needed a mini laptop with a large drive....I got it.

Now, I have decide that to do all my web design work, I will do most of that back on the 15" laptop screen using FireFox and Filezilla. With my handy SYNC program, I can easily manage my files.

Here are a few photos to share the size of a 15" laptop with this 11.6" laptop.
