iPad apps & iPad Nav was created by hayden
Many of us are exploring the Apple iPad and I have used one since June 2010 and love it. I have the 3G/WiFi model 32 GB which I understand includes a GPS receiver.

What MUST HAVE apps are you using on your iPad?

What boating navigation apps have you used and you can recommend?

Thanks.
Hayden

An iPad is I find essential when cruising.
The apps I find useful are iGrib, Navionics, Shipfinder and Pkt Weather.
I use the Navionics maps more than my chart plotter.
Need a water proof case, but getting my iPad wet would be a good excuse to trade up.

Regards

Mark:
Thank you. I will start with Navionics as others have recommended that as well. I just added the iPhone Skype app to the iPad 1 and found out that it works well, just not sized for the iPad.

I am trying to set up the iPad1 as a possible tool for everything (phone, web, photos, video) for a trip coming up, but it may not do it all.

The real issue I see with the iPad is that it needs to be driven with iTunes so you need a laptop. But what if you want to travel without a laptop yet need to back up photos and digital video? You can get photos into the iPad via their camera USB reader, but you cant easily go from the iPad to a portable USB harddrive for backup. And with the iPad at 32GB that's not much for digital photos and digital video shooting.

For fun navigation, I will explore your navionic recommendation. Thanks again
Hayden

iTunes is problem. Your will need a Mac to upload music and most importantly once a year to upgrade the iPads software. Photos are no problem just down load via the small and over priced SD card reader. I am just back from 3 weeks in a failed attempt to get to Deal Island. It has been an unseasonably March lots of 30+ wind. The IP320 handled everything. The iPad was invaluable. I even use a clock application as an alarm clock. I hate apple, but the iPad is indispensable for sailing. I have a RayMarine chart plotter, no need for it with the iPad. You just have to get your head around the concepts of applications. They are what make the iPad. Try the free applications then start spending!
Good luck with your trip.

I have just returned from a USVI sailing trip where I used the iPad 1 and Navionics charts and I was amazed how well this all worked. The iPad 3G unit has a built in GPS that works so well, it will keep tracking even when asleep and down below decks on a shelf! It also worked very well on the AIRPLANE at 39,000 feet and 500 MPH! I ran map tracks all the way home from USVI to Miami and then FL to Philly! That was very interesting to follow the exact islands out the window as you flew through the Bahamas.

Navionics is a very easy tool to use and it worked so well.
