Free WiFi app for Droid Phones! was created by hayden
I have started to us the free WiFi app (FoxFi) for my Samsung Nexus Droid phone and......it works great! You download this app, actvate it and your phone becomes a hot spot. Then you turn on your laptop or iPad, ( like I am doing here) and connect to your phone's hot spot. Now you are surfing the web via you phone at 4G speeds! Yup....all for free.

It works, and it is unreal. No more need (so it seems) for my 3G Verizon Brodband Card that costs me $60/month.

Has anyone else tried this? Have you connected via WiFi a laptop to your cell phone? WOW....it really works.

Look up the Droud App call FoxFi.

Hi Hayden -

I realize you posted this a little while back, but figured some input might be welcome now anyway...

I've tried FoxFi, and it works pretty well. I like being able to st up our own network with security and we use it when we NEED wireless connectivity. The reason for my emphasis on NEED, is that when we have a good 3G signal on my Verizon Droid X and want to use the laptop down below, we use an app called PDAnet and connect the laptop and phone via USB. PDAnet does have an option to connect the phone and a device via Bluetooth, but the one time I tried it, I was connected to a Verizon page which advised I needed to upgrade to a broadband card. Using USB connection I get no such message (and I've been using PDAnet for about two years now)

PDAnet almost always gives us faster speeds than FoxFi and we use it exclusively for connecting when we need good security for online banking, etc. PDAnet is free for regular (http) sites, but $15 for a lifetime license which allows connection to secure (https) sites.

So far this has worked quite well for our Internet access in coastal US waters - We're planning to add a WiFi antenna system in the near future for other areas and/or when I don't have a 3G signal (like in NC). I have no affiliation with either company (and no real computer knowledge) - We're just regular happy users.

Thank you DAZ, I will have to give that one a try as well. Thank you for sharing your experience with this, as FoxFi and now SVTP app are the only two I have used.

When you go with a WiFi rig, set up a Bullet2hp, it is the best. See this

DAZ:
Thank you for the PdaNet app. It hs now replaced my FoxFi app and it is way faster just like you stated. Fantastic Job! This also looks like it is a great solution for anyone with an iPhone if they want to connect it to their laptop.

Hayden,

Has verizon challenged you on this? I was believe that verizon still expects you to pay for the hotspot software option with wome plans. Can they come after you for the cost of the hotspot service that you didn't buy????? I love the verizon network/service but hate their customer relations and pricing. See the article below - I don't understnad all that I read.

Hi George - We haven't had any issues with Verizon when using PDAnet. In my mind, it's really no different than browsing with my phone, I'm just reading and typing on a larger screen/keyboard when I'm connected.

I tried FoxFi a while back, but as I mentioned in posts above, I've found PDAnet to be much faster (although not it's not a hotspot, you need to use a cable between the phone and computer).

Hi to you & Dorene from Daz & Judi (we met at BLM back when we first bought our IP)

This PdaNet is fantastic and very fast. Thank you Daz. VZ has not said anything to me and I am using it on two droids, Googke Nexus phones, and two laptops! I also upgraded FoxFi and now the Hotspot works well so when I want my tablet online I use it. All other times I use PdaNet connected directly to USB laptop. Perfect. I still have my broadband card on suspend saving me $60 per month.

PDAnet is on sale (tonight, at least) for $10 for a lifetime subscription. Anyone needing a copy for another phone, this is a good time to get it. Works Purrrfectly!
