head blockage ? was created by margo
Hi all..

our sdock mate has an IP 350 and he suffered a head blockage last week... and looks like we have one this week... My plan is to pump out first, remove the vent valve at the top of the vented loop and run a snake..

another variable is the air vent and to run some weeder line up through it to see if it is clogged but was curious to see if others have suffered this problem... and any other recommended solutions...

my dock mate suggested that this is a long standing problem on the IP's... just looking for some feedback.. thanks

Margo:

Is the head plugged or are you having trouble pumping the holding tank out?

If it pumping out remove the screen on the vent fitting on the hull first and see if this helps. The screens become plugged easily and will preent the holding tank from being emptied.

Thanks for your post...

Air pressure has been building in the holding tank.

When I was pumping yesterday I noticed the pump handle at the aft head was moving to the up posiiton by it self due to air pressure.. I loosened the pumpout cap on the deck slightly to relieve some of the pressure which it did...

so my conclusion is that the air vent on the hullside is indeed blocked...

My dock mate had this problem last week and he used weed eater line to run it down the air vent from the hullside...

thanks again..

Our system was replaced in 2002, and we use saltwater to flush. Now after 7 years, we too have the exact problem you have described. Hard to flush, handle rises back up. So....I took about the plunger expecting to replace the basic parts. WRONG! AS it turned out, we will be replacing the entire system once again since the lines are packed SOLID with what seems like concrete. This is what happens with saltwater and urine as it stands, it crystallizes and packs. So, everywhere in our lines where sewage would have been resting over time (week to week or overnight) it has solidified. YUK. So, I hope this in not your issue as well, but if you flush with saltwater, and if you do not rinse with fresh water, this may be the case. We HAVE been rinsing with fresh water when we leave the boat, but on daily usage, we do not.

Here is a photo of the back elbow from the head. This material is as solid as concrete. It is amazing the head flushed at all. The lines are exactly the same!!!!

Hayden, Thanks for your reply. YUK is right !!!

Here's what I accomplished today, as Bobby suggested the screens on the hull side fitting were packed with junk... and who knows what else !... I removed one of these screens and took a piece of copper wire and fed it through the hull side fitting to clear out any blockage.. the good news is water is passing through .. the bad news is water is passing through.. .

I will pump out tomorrow...and see if I can clear the air vent hose of any remaining water... The handle at the pump feels completely different and I can actually hear things flowing to the tank.. this is good...

I was disheartened to see your photo and I hope that you are able to replace the system and hoses without too much trouble.

thanks again..
