Good day All,

I have a 1987 IP27 (hull #92) and I'm wondering if anyone could point me to a photo of their IP27 thru hull fitting for the overboard discharge/holding tank. Right now my setup is working just fine but I was looking at installing a Whale Gulper pump to empty out my holding tank while underway. Right now my only options are to empty the holding tank from the deck fitting or direct discharge from the head. As I'm planning a trip down the west coast of Mexico (and beyond) I'm looking for options. I was thinking about punching a new dedicated thru hull for that pump but I'm finding the room under the starboard settee to be lacking the height for the shutoff valve. My current thru hull only has a "to tank or overboard" valve. There is no "shutoff" for the actual thru hull itself. I'm trying to figure out if this was from the factory like that or was something done after the fact. Hence the request for a picture or two. I'm down here at Baja Naval in Ensenada B.C. Mexcio right now and they brought up the fact that I can't actually close the thru hole off if needed to. So I'm looking at what everyone else might have going on in this respect. Thanks for any info!

I would NOT drill another hole in the boat just to use a macerator pump. Pump the tank out through the existing thru hull. To do this, you need to add two more three way ball valves. One gets added to the existing thru hull, the other one gets added into the deck pumpout line. Here is a photo diagram:

The idea is works as follows. The head can pump into the tank OR directly overboard. The macerator pump which is tied into the 3 way valve in the deck pump out line, allows it to empty the tank. We have run this system for 10 years now and it works well.

Here are some new photos of this design just rebuilt by the factory on our boat:

On the IP31 the holding tank is right next to the head, but the head outlet hose goes forward to the port settee to a y-valve. youcan either discharge overboard , if appropriate, or pump back to the holding tank- altogether this run must be about 20 feet. Any reason not to put a y-valve under the sink in the head and pump a couple feet to the holding tank (reducing the amount of water required to clear the sanitary hoses) or switch the valve to pump forward to the overboard discharge thru-hull?

thanks
Don

That's how my 31 is plumbed and IMHO common sense dictates that is how it should have been designed originally.
