Water Heater not working on IP380 was created by lwhitin
I recently purchased a IP 380. The boat was launched last week and I had my first chance to run the engine. After running it for more then one hour I discovered that the water in the hot water system was still cold. The fresh water hoses running from the engine felt hot. The Marina is telling me that since the hot water heater is above the engine I am probably getting air bubbles in the engine fresh water lines. They could not figure a way to remedy the situation. Has anyone encountered this problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Lindsay:
The two water hoses that run from the engine to the water heater are lines filled with engine antifreeze/coolant. This coolant will be at 180 degrees F when the thermostat opens on the top front of the engine. This usually happens after 10 minutes or as soon as the engine block is hot. This coolant loop then runs into the water heater, through a heat exchanger loop in the water heater and then back to the engine. This is a fully closed loop and the coolant is being pumped by the engine. if your water heater is not getting hot or warm after 20-30 minutes, then this coolant line is blocked or it could be pinched in the sail locker where it makes a hard 90 degree turn around the stern to get to the water heater. If your engine temp is not over heating, then your thermostat is most likely working and opening. If it did not open, then coolant would not flow to heat the water heater. I would look for a pinched line by following the entire run and checking the hose. Also, when the engine is running, and hot, check the hose temp in the sail locker or right at the water heater. These are the black rubber coolant hoses, not the water hoses. If these are not hot then you have no flow back to the water heater.

If all else fails, you can use this reason to drain the coolant and flush it all out and add new coolant.

Can you tell us if there is heat at the coolant hose as it enters the water heater?

Hayden;
Thanks for the info. I will check for any pinching on the black hoses when I get on my boat tomorrow. I did check the black water hoses where they connected to the hot water tank. They felt hot, but not as hot as they were on the engine end. Do you think there is any validity to the Marina yards cliam that there is a air bubble in the black water hoses that feed the hot water heater? if that is the case is there any way to get those air bubbles out since the water tank is above the engine?
Tanks again for your help.

I guess that an air bubble could prevent the coolant from flowing as air will compress were fluid will not. I am still betting on a pinched line or a blockage in the line. This coolant needs to flow through the heat exchanger in the engine to cool the engine, so it has to be flowing.

Last Oct 2011, I torn down my engine and serviced all systems. In this photo essay you can see the coolant lines and heat exchanger. Take a look at this.

Let us know what you find out and this weekend I will ask my Yanmar friend as well.

Hayden;
I moved my boat back to my home port, at one point on my trip home I had to motor for 10 hours. After about 5 hours I started getting some hot water. Looks like whatever caused the blockage started to clear up.
Thanks again for all your advise.
