Hayden, you sure that is cast iron, not cast SS? Iron would be better than SS I think

Just a thought, concerning "outrageous pricing." It might be worth the time to get to know your local John Deere parts people. John Deere uses lots of Yanmar engines on their products. A number of Yanmar products are private labeled for John Deere and sell at much less than Yanmar retail. 2 years ago, the JD parts people ordered the entire set of exhaust system parts (for IP-32) - from the block to the hose (see Hayden's diagrams above) - for me, from their Yanmar dealer in Seattle. $350-ish total my cost. Probably comparable to Hayden's pricing.

I'm happy to announce that we pulled out exhaust elbow last weekend and it wasn't at all corroded. Just a small amount of soot. This was at about 750 engine hours so we won't pull again for another 1000.

The reason your mixing elbow was clean is because THIS is the square model, the newer design, the $900+ one, the one that does not clog. This is the GOOD ONE. It did not hurt to take a look at it, I just do not want others thinking they need to do this as well if they have the SQUARE model. This SQUARE design mixes the sea water into the exhaust in such a way that it does not build up like the U SHAPED one does. So you really do not need to do this at 1,000 hours. No need.

Good one = square = $900+ usually never needs service or cleaned, it does not build up
Bad one = U shape = $200 needs serviced, changed out because it DOES build up

Hayden i wonder at what point we would just go out and buy the new square shaped one and not have to spend 200$ every two years or so? Im thinking next time around i will be getting the new design.

Marko:

I wanted to do that as well, but the square mixing elbow uses a larger exhaust hose. So you need to then add a reducer to fit it back down to the 2" exhaust hose of the U shape mixing elbow. So, I simply have a spare onboard and I plan to replace it it or inspect it every 3-4 years.
The newer engines use the 3" exhaust hose and this allows them to breath a little better as well. Technically, my 3JH2e 38 hp requires a 2.5" exhaust host, but they came with a 2" exhaust. I think that is part of the problem. So, maybe switching the U shape mixing elbow up to the square one is a good idea. I am not sure.

Hi Hayden,
Thanks for all you do with this forum.
Did you feel it necessary to replace the large hose coming out of your mixing elbow when you changed the elbow? I can't see anything obviously wrong but wondered if you did when you changed yours.

No need, that's the exhaust hose and it usually does not clog up. I just replace the top U shaped piece.

Hi. I have a Yanmar 3gm30f and will be replacing the mixing elbow. Has anyone replaces the elbow by just removing the elbow and the coupler below it? Thanks

Regeaux,
See my post above. Yes, I've done the mixing elbow on the 3GM30F. But I did the whole thing, from the block to the hose (as one assembly) for a very reasonable price, because I ordered from a John Deere dealer (who got the parts from a Yanmar parts house in Seattle). I personally found it much easier to assemble the pieces before trying to put them in the boat. Note that the elbow that I got is NOT the square configuration.

I listened to all the advice and actually took it. LOL. Removed the 4 bolts, took it to someone with a bench vise, the two of worked on it and was able to separate it. Replaced and now water is coming out.

Do the bolts come out relatively easily or are they prone to breaking?  Did anyone need to heat them with a torch before removal?

Old ones do not come out easily. It's best to spray them with PB Blaster and let the soak in for 15 min..Then when applying flight pressure, tap the socket with a hammer to vibrate the bolt until it breaks loose.
This helps.
Good luck.

I'm about to do this replacement on my 2GM20F and have 2 questions:
- Do we put anything on the Coupling pipe threads, like sealant or anti-seize?
- Are the Couplings generally reusable or should I change this out as well.

Thanks,
Art

I just replaced this elbow yesterday on my 1985 2 cylinder Yanmar.  I put around 400 hours on this elbow but have no idea how many hours it saw before me.  As the photos show, it was badly clogged with carbon and some salts, and this was in the areas that are easy to see.  Normally the concealed areas are the worst so I have to imagine that my engine was not happy.

The replacement actually went very smoothly.  The 4 bolts holding the unit to the manifold came out with very little effort.  I am going to see if I can heat the old elbow with a torch and get it to release the old coupling for reuse.

Best,
Art

Thank you once again. I have received my new Mixing elbow (yes the 3" version) and was perplexed. I had figured the best way was a reducer from 3" to 2". And you have verified the part I was eyeing. Yes it is perplexing that IP and Mastry did not go with a 3" exhaust. Incidentally on my recent trip I established that the Impeller pump housing had been damaged over time and I am replacing it too. By the way, Yanmar makes a really nice impeller puller (Part # 129671-92110) and if you use the new threaded impeller (part # 129670-42610) it is way easier to change out impellers.
