IP35 Bobstay Rigging Failure was created by hayden
A fellow IP35 owner stopped by for a visit and brought with them this broken bobstay rod rigging off their IP35. It had broken and was only found by accident as they were working on the boat. This is the rod that goes from the bow sprite down to the waterline tank fitting. It opposes the forestay so it is a key piece of the mast rigging. They were able to have another rod made and they said is was easy to reinstall. I guess we all should take this part apart and look at it closely during our yearly inspections. This is something that cannot be inspected while it is rigged. The rod needs to be loosened with the turn buckle and then inspected. I would think it would be a good idea to also loosen the backstays to relax the pull on the forestay before removing this bobstay.

Here are some photos...

Spoke to SecoSouth today and they need to know two details....

1. Pin diameter ... Is it 5/8" or 3/4"?

2. Pin to pin length. Center to center.

With this info they can supply a replacement.

Price coming soon.

Re the IP 35 bob stay.
When I purchased my boat , the PO already had replaced the rod rigging bobstay
With 1/4" Stainless Steel chain and a turnbuckle.
When youl research the safe working load on this chain its relatively low at 2600lb.
As well, the 5/16" shackle used for the repair had a bent pin! Scary!
So, I contacted the factory and purchased a completelty new bobstay with rod rigging and a huge turnbuckle - identical to the original design.
I installed it this winter...

You know, the bobstay Is very easy to damage just by touching the dock...
In hind sight I think I would use wire rigging and Norsman type fittings
Because if I ever have to repair it again (somewhat likely -- just touch the dock)
The wire rope would be cheaper, easier, and faster to source and replace.

Lastly that broken end with the ragged edge as shown in the top photo,
looks like it was induced by mechanical damage or stress corrosion (impact damage) rather then just straight surface corrosion.

Regards
Ed

I first discovered hairline cracks in my 1989 IP35 in 1994. Was on way to Bahamas, did not want to take the time to wait on rod rigging. It was explained to me that factory used rod for its corrosion resistance. I went ahead and replaced with wire. I have since replaced wire twice as a normal part of rig maintenance. While cruising, I find the availability of wire and needed fittings a plus for wire over rod.
