IP 31 as a boat for chesapeake bay was created by summit_elan
Hi All:

I formerly owned a seafarer 26 and am now ready to move up in size. the IP 31 fits a lot of my criteria for weight, beam, sail plan, cost room, amenities. My concerns are based on IP "haters" out there that you can find by googling and looking at other forums; namely that the IP31 is slow, even vs. other full keel boats out there, and that it's dispacement to length makes it a bad boat for the "light airs of the chesapeake" (though I have to say i seem to always get caught in a squall!). What is the general sense of IP owners? are you making a true trade off and do any of you have an issue with the IP 31 as a bay boat? I plan to day sail, overnight and maybe cruise a bit in the next couple of years, then sail out of the mouth of the bay and keep going south. I admit that an older Catalina 30 would probably do me fine for the bay but would need replacing in 2-4 years and I think I'd be better off getting a boat I could leave the bay with.

thanks,

Elan,
We are the owners of an IP-31 here on the Gulf Coast of Florida just off Tampa Bay. For 8 years we sailed a Tartan 27 on Mobjack Bay and the southern part of the Chesapeake. The winds and water conditions are much the same. We love our IP-31. I'm not so concerned that it is slower than other boats with similar LOA. It handles nicely, you can't beat the size of the cabin, and most important...my wife feels safe in it. Last Saturday we had 12 knots of wind and we were making 5.7 knots sailing as close to the wind as we could go flying only the Genoa tight on the spreaders. I'm very satisfied and I think you will be also. Mike "Nomad" IP-31 #49

Hi Mike and thanks for responding...do you have a sloop or cutter rig? I agree that my wife will like the sea-kindliness (sp?) of the IP31, but will we be motoring a lot because we can't catch a breeze?

We have a cutter rig. Don't often use the staysail, though. Keep your propeller clean of barnacles and expect 6.0 knots top motoring speed. Mike

The 31 is of the older hull shape like the 27, 31, 38 which all have a wider bow for room below and a wider stern for a nice qtr berth. The next hull shape versions trimmed these areas and might have improved the sailing performance; 29, 32, 35, 40. These have a bit finer bow entry and a lifted stern making them go through the water better. Then came the zero boats which improved these lines even more; 350, 370, 380, 420.

As for your decision it usually is first based on what you can afford then second on what your partner likes and third on sailing. For example, we had a 27 for 10 yrs cause thats what we could afford. Then we decided to move up and we wanted the 40 but we could not afford that so we bought a 35 at the top of our price range and sailed it 11 yrs now. Yes we still want the 40 but we are cruising with the 35 and doing well.

The key is, figure out the most you can afford and buy that model cause aftrr you set it up you will not want to sell it and it will be your boat for many miles and years.

If you can afford the 32 compare those as well. Then if you can afford the 35 it just keeps going....

No matter what, just get your IP because the boats bring a ton of joy and adventure to the owners.

Keep us posted. Thanks.

Well, there is a beautiful 32 for sail near Annapolis, but it's out of my price range. I have not actually sailed on a 31 and I'd love to tag along on a day sail if there's someone out there. The 31 looks great on paper but I don't think I know enough about how they sail for me. Anyone out there who would let me tag along?

Elan:
Using the community members and advanced search in here, I have found this IP31 in Annapolis MD:

Link is here

Then if I filter just on IP31s I get this list:

Maybe you can contact them and talk about your IP31 quests.
