SUMMARY:Gulf Coast Island Packet Rendezvous 9/30/2011
DESCRIPTION:
It is that wonderful time of the year again when we owners of the world’s best cruising yachts gather on the Gulf Coast to celebrate our good fortune and enjoy the fellowship with our kindred sailors. With that flowery introduction, let me give you the preliminary schedule for the 2011 rendezvous. I have to tell you up front that for the first time in memory Island Packet has had such a lean year that there are no t-shirts being made, or any other promotional items available. Now for the good news:

We will kick off the rendezvous as usual with dinner Friday evening at the Hall’s home, followed in the morning with an optional breakfast at Lakewood of scrambled eggs, hash browns, biscuits, etc. We made this an option since some of us would prefer an eggless breakfast. Lunch is included in the registration, with the standard fare of cheeseburger and fries, but we have also included the option of a tri-salad of chicken, tuna and shrimp for an extra $10. Dinner is included in the registration, and includes 3 choices- breast of chicken oscar, grilled or blackened salmon, or pan seared tilapia. This year, we also have the option of a choice of 4 desserts for an additional $9- chocolate mousse cake, New York cheesecake, carrot cake, or key lime pie. There will also be choices of a salad and two sides. Sunday brunch will be an option also for $23.

On Saturday morning following breakfast, there will be a presentation by Triad Marine on the use of life rafts, including an in-pool demonstration! (Bring your bathing suits to experience getting into a life raft in the water) Following that, Pete and Sally Rasmussen will give us a rundown on their experiences with taking their boat to Pensacola and then down to the Keys last year, along with lessons learned. During lunch, we will show a video of a presentation soon to be made by the historian of Galveston Bay to the Galveston city council about the past, present, and future of Galveston Bay. After lunch, there will be a presentation on satellite phones, followed by a presentation by Jeremy Hood.

At about 4PM, the seminars will be over, and it has been suggested that we have a “show and tell” time for us to demonstrate various system we have on our boats which may be of interest to others in the group. For example, my boat, Pilgrim, has two new electric heads, a built-in Iridium satphone with a removable handset, Sirius weather, and AIS. If any of you have some cool gear to share with everyone, this will be the time. Cocktail hour will feature a cash bar, followed by a group photo and dinner.

The base registration cost will be $80 per person, and LYC will charge $20 per night for slip rental. The registration form is attached, along with the directory form. I would greatly appreciate your early response, both as an e-mail telling me if you are coming and if you are bringing your boat, and as a check in the mail.

I will be providing more details as we get closer to the event.
