Staysail Traveler Control

Sunday - August 8, 2021Views: 416
There are many ways to approach the staysail shape control on the older packets. Some have removed the boom, some have left it as is and simply move the traveler stops to allow the traveler freedom to roam on the track. On the newer packets (known to some as the 'oh series' 320, 350,370, 420 etc.) the Hoyt boom offers one solution where the boom does not lift as you ease the sheets. On my 32 and now on my 37 I took a different approach. Wanting to have more control over the position of the boom and improved control especially when sailing away from a lee shore (beating), or reaching. I installed cheek blocks (Ronstan) on the outer edge of the traveler track and tapped into the aluminum built into the deck where the traveler is installed. Starboard side is a single block. Port side is a double stacked two block system. below the blocks are spacers made out of starboard to align with the track. I led the lines aft to the cockpit through Harken double blocks and then through Ronstan cleats on the coach roof. The lines attach to the traveler (eye spliced by me). Though it adds two more lines I am satisfied with the control it gives me. Regardless of position of the boom I can now still exert pressure downwards on the boom controlling sail shape. Incidentally, my sailing mentor purchased my 32 from me and he liked the setup and kept it.
