Smart Phone and ipad fro cruising was created by a Guest
I am going to upgrade to a smart phone soon and also am considering getting an ipad. We are with Verizon and Joyce has the new Android Thunderbolt which she loves. It seems to be a slightly better option than the iphone, for us, but since I am also considering also getting an ipad, I wonder if it would be better to get the iphone due to compatibilty issues. Any recommendations?

Also what are the Android good apps for cruising? Iphone Apps?

Thanks, Tom

Tom:
I have the iPad 3G/WiFi and LOVE it. I also use Verizon's Blackberry now for 3 yrs. I have been looking at the upgrade for iPhone 4 and spent many days in Feb trying to make myself buy one. The problem is the iPad spoils you for touch screen use, and then you go to that microscopic screen of the iPhone and its hard to use for me.

I have looked hard at the Thunderbolt and it is PERFECT ! I want to move to that, but now we have the iPhone 5 teasing reports. If the iPhone 5 came out with the screen size of the Thunderbolt and EVO then it would be the new hot phone. But I have read that it may be the small screen again.

So, for me, the phone is the phone, I really only use it for that, now that I have the iPad. On the road the iPad is just too darn good. You really want the 3G so you don't need to rely on WiFi. The only issue with this is the added $25/month for 3G on the iPad. I use it so much its worth it.

I am keeping my old Blackberry 8330 Verizon and simply using the iPad.

I have added Navionics to the iPad and since I have the 3G unit, which also has a built in GPS, I can use this as a really good chartplotter. It is way too easy to use. On our last trip in the Caribbean, the ipad would run a track and chart while on the shelf in the qtr berth and the unit was asleep. It just keeps logging. UNREAL.
So look at this app:

www.navionics.com/NavionicsMobile.asp

PS:
It would even track with GPS the flight home at 34,000 feet and 500 MPH! that was fun!

We also have a 3G iPad for the GPS. We never activated the data and use a Verizon aircard for data on all our wifi devices and only have to pay one fee.

I have MAC everything! iPhone 4, iPad WiFi, MacBook. I have Navionics on my iPhone. I am debating about getting something for my iPad and have also looked at iNavX, which is one download for both devices. Reviews are excellent. . .anyone have any experience and/or input about the navigation apps that are out there?
